Founded in 1791, for the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, the Franciscan order set up the Mission Santa Cruz. It is a religious site for the conversion of natives to Christianity, starting with the Ohlone and then the Yokuts. A Holy Cross Church was built on this site in 1889 which is home to the a few old headstones and a part of the foundation stone of the original buildings. Still an active parish, the church lies next to the a replica of the original church which today functions as a chapel.

tripadvisorWe visited the mission recently since my 4th grade daughter is working on her mission project. Getting to the mission was simple enough. Parking was plentiful. Entrance was free. The staff was very very friendly and helpful. The mission itself, the grounds, church, surroundings, etc were quite small. You enter thru the gift shop. The museum is very minimal. There is a self-guided tour, which was minimal. From the gift shop you can enter the original church or walk into the garden. Even though there wasn’t much to see, we are still glad we went and would encourage others to check it out. I wouldn’t expect to spend more than 30 minutes there.
MoreWe returned for a visit to the historic Mission Santa Cruz. This is one of the original missions in California Friends of ours were married there, so special for us for that too.
MoreWe visited Mission Santa Cruz. There is the mission, a visitor center, and gift shop. There is also the larger church across the street called Holy Cross Church (1889). There is also a small park. The mission is part of the California Mission System.
MoreThere is free parking in the area. Admission is free, but there is a suggested donation of $5 cash to be deposited into the donation box. The museum/gift shop is small for a California Mission. The chapel, however opulent, is also small for a California Mission. There are no grounds to visit. Of the 11 California Missions I have visited to date, this is the least interesting.
