Had a wonderful time at the polkafest, listening to the variety of music.

The Lizzadro Museum is a gem of a museum! There are displays of gemstones and minerals, and many works of art including sculptures, inlaid pictures, and dioramas made of precious stones. There are also short films to watch and often special exhibits and presentations. The museum is housed on one floor, and easily accessible for wheelchairs. Adult admission is a reasonable $10, but if you live in the area, you can get a library pass for half that amount. And an added bonus--the gift shop has the most reasonably priced gems and gifts that I've seen at rock and mineral stores. You can spend 1-2 hours visiting--definitely a must-see.

Where else but Oakbrook would have a museum dedicated to gems and precious stones. A smallish but thoughtful venue that is home to exotic and possibly priceless pieces of art. Beautifully sculpted vases of jade from China compete with intricate mosaics from Italy. Videos show how each are created by master craftsmen. Minerals and fossils are included as well as a wall of snuff bottles from last century. The star of the show is a jade temple about five feet tall that is representative of the Forbidden city in Bejing. My wife and I learned quite a bit about how these wonderful works of art are created and the patience required for such a detailed endeavor. I admire anyone who can look at a lump of marble and make something beautiful from it. That is a true super power.

This is a small but unique museum that is very much worth a visit. It features an international art collection made from jade, ivory, coral and a variety of rocks and gems in different time periods. It also has a number of micromosaics and intarsia which are each so fine you would think you’re looking at a painting. This isn’t for very small children but I would recommend it for ages 8 or 9 and up. About half of the exhibits would only be appreciated by teens and adults, but the other half are easily enjoyed by children as well. The gift shop offers a wide variety for the kids, as well as jewelry and other items for the grown-ups.
