Reviews
tripadvisorWe chose this hotel for its proximity to the mall and museums. It was great for that purpose, but there are several reasons for my giving it one star: though the employees were kind and helpful when asked for assistance, this hotel is basically a self serve operation…meaning that you walk in and sign yourself into one of several check-in computer screens and make your own key cards. (There is an guest services person sitting there to assist you if needed.) Then you go up the elevator to your room. The elevator has a large tv screen with one of three different videos playing. (I really didn’t appreciate any of the videos, and I frankly find it offensive to watch a man in his underwear doing pirouettes in women’s red pumps. Very tacky and unprofessional for a hotel.) We’re didn’t look at photos of the hotel or its room options before we booked, so we were unpleasantly surprised when we opened the door to our room, which was no bigger than a travel trailer (only the width of a king size bed.) It had 6 hangers for clothes with room to store small suitcases in the cubby below. There are no appliances, such as a coffee maker. There were no cups to drink water from. If you want coffee you go downstairs to the bar and purchase it. Lights, window treatments, and the TV are all operated from an iPad mini on the small desk. The bathroom is a “frosted glass surround” with a toilet and shower. Not really private. We had to ask for towels every evening, as maid service doesn’t come to check. Because the king mattress on the platform takes up the back half of the room, you have to wiggle out of the bed to go to the bathroom at night. As for the rest of the hotel, we found the artwork gaudy and the hotel seem to pride itself on being edgy. If you want to order food in the bar, you get your utensils, etc, and then clear your dishes when done. The employees working the bar are kind and helpful. They, and the maid who brought us towels, were the only pleasant part of our stay. Marriott is featuring this hotel as being under their management…to their shame. Hospitality should not be a lost art.
MoreGreat location! 850 feet to the L’enfant Plaza Metro, ten minutes on foot to the National Mall, 15 minutes on foot to the Wharf. We ventured out to restaurants to save time with uber/lyft and the fares were under $12. Room is tiny but we are not spending much time here. No laundry. Free filtered water. Everything is high tech. Took us old folk two days to figure out the lights! We have been lucky, weather is mild for the season, about 80 degrees, but I brought a sweater along everyday because the museums are air conditioned. Two hours in the capitol and I was freezing the first day.
MoreGood location close to the Capitol and museums. Quiet streets at night. Rooms are quirky but cool and clean. Good WiFi.
MoreI recently stayed at citizenM Washington DC Capitol and found it to be a very modern, tech-forward hotel. If you enjoy technology, you'll appreciate the self-check-in kiosks, iPad-controlled room features, keyless entry, and the overall innovative approach to the guest experience. The location is also excellent—within walking distance of many of Washington's major attractions and close to public transit. The rooms are compact but thoughtfully designed, making good use of the available space. Everything was clean, and the common areas have a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.Where I think there is room for improvement is the level of service. While staff were polite, the experience felt more transactional than hospitable. With so much of the guest journey being automated, there are opportunities for staff to be more proactive and engaging to create a warmer, more memorable stay. One thing prospective guests should know is that complimentary bottled water, beyond the inital 2 bottles on check in, is not provided in guest rooms. Instead, the hotel encourages guests to use its filtered water refill stations, which aligns with its sustainability approach. It's also worth noting that housekeeping is provided upon request, rather than automatically each day, regardless of the length of your stay. If you'd like your room serviced, you'll need to request it during your stay. Something they failed to mention in advance.Overall, I'd recommend citizenM to business travelers and anyone who values convenience, modern design, and technology. If you're looking for a more traditional hotel experience with higher-touch service, you may find it doesn't quite meet those expectations.
MoreSmaller rooms and desk, decent bed. Location is a few blocks south of the Mall. Location advantages: 2 blocks to major metro subway; near Mall, quiet area at night, food court next to subway and McDonalds also 2 blocks away, no restaurants very close, but can take subway to 7th ave north of Mall for tons of restaurants for take out. Microwave in dining area near lobby but not in room. Fridge in room. The provide a breakfast for like $22 that gets very repetitive. Price is reasonable for such a decent location. No liquor stores in area and the ones north of the Mall charge roughly double the ordinary cost. Plan accordingly. Rooftop bar has a distant view of Capitol, but that's it, but beers are like $9 a pop. Plan accordingly. All in all a reasonable value and a decent location.
