My husband and I ran across the 1889 Runnels County Courthouse on a Tuesday morning as we were traveling. The current (second) courthouse was built between 1888 and 1889 in the center of a 2 block square. It is 3 stories tall. The land was given by the Santa Fe Railroad. It is one of the largest courthouse squares in Texas. The Second Empire style building was made from local stone. In 1941, the courthouse was remodeled and 2 story wings (east & west) were added. There is an old 3 story jail house next door.
