In town for a polo match, we decided to come here for a hike. Plenty of parking, with spots to push in your kayak, nice, smooth pathway, and great scenic views! We saw crew team practice, a group of news cameras trying to get video of the president playing golf in the other side of the Potomac, herons, ducks, turtles and enjoyed the historic markers along the path! Lots of bikers and families out for a nature stroll!

On a recent late-May weekend, we went on a hike on the C&O Canal starting from Riley's Lock. There was plenty of parking, as well as families who wanted a spell from the coronavirus confinement. There were several fishermen on the Seneca Creek, which flows into the Potomac River at this point. In order to cross the creek, C&O Canal builders placed a lock and aqueduct on this spot, so that barges could flow over the creek unhindered. Alas, the aqueduct is no longer standing, but the remains are clearly visible and support a bridge for the towpath. We walked north for over two miles, with excellent views of the Potomac River on the left and a swampy canal on the right. Along the towpath we encountered many hikers and bikers. A special treat was seeing a black-crowned night heron, a medium-sized heron we had never seen before.
