Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse was constructed in 1879. The purpose of this lighthouse was to guide the ships that brought in miners as well as equipment that were used for mining gold during California's Gold Rush era. Over the years, the lighthouse has had only three keepers, and today the structure has been converted into a museum. Esther Abbott, a known photographer, was the very first person to sponsor the lighthouse's rebuilding. The name of the tower honors the memory of Esther Abbott's son Mark who lost his life in a surfing accident.
