tripadvisorConvenient location, large comfortable rooms, excellent friendly staff, delicious breakfast! This is now my go to place when I visit Winston Salem.
MoreFabulous atmosphere…The Innkeepers were so helpful with the navigation of downtown WS The Hot Breakfast was the wonderful as well!
MoreWhat a disappointment The Shaffner Inn was.The room we had reserved, the Piedmont Suite, was spacious and at first entrance was impressive. Sadly, we found the floor needed vacuuming, the ladies dressing table mirror was so dusty, you could write your name on it.Two lamps on either side of the couch didn’t have lightbulbs in them. Ironically, there was a big extension cord, that could be easily tripped on running across the floor to these two non-working lamps. The TV was not connected to anything and we had to use the inn’s WiFi to watch a movie on our laptop. We called the “emergency number” about the non-working TV and the voice mail message said they would quickly respond, but from our 7pm call, to the following morning, NO ONE CALLED.The toilet seat in the bathroom was loose and there was no body soap in the dispenser in the shower. The mattress in the king size bed was hard and VERY uncomfortable. The morning breakfast consisted of strawberries and blueberries, plain bagels, little pastries, boxed oatmeal, orange juice, coffee and water. Our reservation (see pictures) said we would receive a hot breakfast, but we were told at check-in that they said they gave their chef the day off and we would be receiving a light continental breakfast instead. No one even asked how our stay was as we were leaving.None of these deficiencies were reflected in the rather high price for the room.Don’t believe the pictures posted on their website because the reality is quite different.Like the dirty water in what looked to have been a once beautiful koi pond.
MoreThe pictures are deceiving in what this place really is. Old, tired, run-down, dirty, unfriendly, uncomfortable and … most importantly loud. With an Inn Keeper not overly happy to see you or accommodating. Not what we expected … and not worth the stay.
MoreMy husband & I spent a few days in Winston-Salem & thoroughly enjoyed our accommodations at the Shaffner Inn. We chose the Piedmont Room, which is situated at the very top of this historic Inn. However, navigating the stairs was a good way to walk off the delicious breakfasts provided. Menu items included build your own omelets, sausage, bacon, fruit, juices, & coffee. The staff were most helpful & the owner shared some local history as he greeted us during breakfast. The venue hails from the early 1900's, noted by the original brick and various fireplaces. Our room was very comfortable and extremely SPACIOUS (the room has its own thermostat & mini fridge). While in Winston-Salem, we toured both Reynolda (estate of R. J. Reynolds) and the village of Old Salem, a venue weaving the stories of the American South & the contributions of the Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples.
