On another visit to Fort Allen Park, I revisited the USS Maine Cannon in the southern corner of the park near the bandstand. The USS Maine was a battleship that experienced an unexplained explosion and sank while in Havana Harbor in February 1898.Who hasn’t heard the phrase Remember the Maine!? Most historians believe the incident started the Spanish-American War.I found it kind of amazing that this cannon was salvaged and later brought to Fort Allen Park. Restored in 2014, I think it’s in great condition. While I was admiring the cannon, an Eastern Cottontail came out of hiding in some nearby brush. I stayed very still and got to watch him for a few minutes. For its historic value and well-preserved condition, I rate the USS Maine Cannon at 4.25 and recommend stopping by when visiting Fort Allen Park.If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.
