There is no proof that this was Poe's room for the short time he was at the university ... those records are said to be have been lost in the Rotunda fire. So ... the stuff in the room is staged and the room itself was chosen because it's number 13. Still it's fun to stop by, especially with out of town visitors.

I was absolutely beside myself when we found this hidden Charlottesville gem. #13 West Range (renumbered in honor of Poe) is believed to have been the room in which Edgar Allan Poe resided during his time at UVA. A historical marker near the road is a helpful landmark in looking for the room. The room's door has been replaced with a panel of glass so that visitors can gaze into dorm room which has been decorated to reflect what it probably looked like. There are a couple of fanciful touches, like a stuffed raven. Next to the door is a button which visitors can push to hear narration about Poe's time at UVA. The button was not working when we visited.
