tripadvisorVery disappointed, especially for the $50 a person. Graphics arts of paintings projected on large screens and the floor. Discos in the 70s did this. I guess the advertisements are technically truthful about what this is. I don't how this is getting 5 star reviews in ABQ and in other cities.
MoreThe experience was different from what I expected and not always in a good way. First there was way too much to read and digest ... a few quotes would have been appreciated and they would not have been lost in the clutter. Second, some of the visual experiences were over the top ... such as swirling colors ... I wanted to vomit. The large room was way too much to take in at any one moment. However, I did enjoy the orchard paintings (I saw them as original works when I was a teen) ... loved the way that the white blossoms swirled around the room.If you are not familiar with his work this is an interesting way to open the door to your appreciation of this famous artist. If you are familiar with his body of work this exhibit might be disappointing. I'm still trying to make up my mind.
MoreSomewhat Disappointing. We had heard some good reviews from friends on this, so decided to spring for it. The cost seemed high to me, but my wife wanted to do it, so we did. The first part of the exhibit is just lighted posters of Van Gogh's life. You can read this on Wikipedia for free, if you wish. The immersive experience is contained in two rooms at the end of the tour. The first is very unimpressive. The second room is really the heart of the show and is really just a light show where some of Van Gogh's famous paintings are more or less created in lights projected on the walls and on the floor. These are moving light displays and when I first walked in it made me a little dizzy. I closed my eyes several times while in there to avoid nausea. I can't say it was horrible, but I really expected more. After spending considerable time in that room, we left. The exit is a gift shop with outrageously priced items that one will purchase, take home, and a few weeks later will wind up in the kitchen junk drawer. I felt slightly nauseated after this because of the moving lights. If you have problems with merry-go-rounds and moving lights as I do, I think you may want to pass this up.
MoreWe enjoyed it.Three areas: First area a history of Van Gogh. Second area is an interesting immersive experience with video of Van Gogh like digital images.Third Room is the Main Room. Giant Digital Displays of various Van Gogh paintings. The painting fade in and out, and it's very mesmerizing. The portraits will wink at you for example. My favorite segment was what I assume was some drafts in black and white of Townscape Paintings, that grew and developed, and the got colored in and became an amazing painted. Another great section is based around Starry Night, and the swirls move and stars twinkle. The landscapes and Seascapes are incredible when they are 20 or 30 feet tall and 100 feet long.Overall, a very enjoyable experience. There are some possible improvements ... The overlap of the different projectors is not exact, which is fine for some images, but makes words a bit fuzzy. They could use a few more benches to sit on (ALTHOUGH, sitting on the floor when the images area also projected on the floor all around you IS kind of cool). Also, maybe because it was one of the first really hot days recently, the temp in the main hall at the end was quite warm.... need better AC.Also, I think they should cover the rafters above the main room with black fabric (or better yet project onto white fabric. The images on the walls are amazing, and then your eyes hit the girders and wires and ugly roof.
MoreThe way it was portrayed on their website (and on TV) made it look like a much more interactive and comprehensive type of event. There are three areas (which I wished I had known before starting the tour). Four, if you count the store. The first one encompasses mostly written words of Vincent’s life and part of some of his letters to his brother Theo (who was more famous than Vincent at the time). It also explains the type of paintings representing Vincent’s lifelong work. It is a very congested area, difficult to be away from people. The second, and smallest, room is where (for me) the best part was (I should’ve stayed there a lot longer). It is really dark and Vincent’s face and many of his famous spirals/swirls dance on the wall and the floor). Colorful and cozy. The third and last room is where the main action takes place. There are benches to sit on in the middle of the room and four walls and two columns where either quotes or paintings are projected on. The lighting for most of the artwork is so bright that it looks really washed out when you take pictures of them. The sound is too low to really understand what the voices are saying (I am fluent in French and could barely understand what was being said in that language). I had expected more movement, more interaction with the various works of art. When something is really interesting, time flies by – well, in this case, it didn’t. I only stayed until the end because I wanted to get my money’s worth. $40 for barely 45 minutes of slides on a wall and Vincent’s history (easily found on-line) is not what I call a good deal. There were kids there and all of them seemed very bored by the whole thing. There were talks that this type of event would be followed with other artists (namely Frida Kahlo), but I would NOT go back to this type of event. Porter potty outsides, no real restrooms. Waiting in line is also outside so be prepared with whatever weather is forecasted (it rained hard when we waited to enter). Parking lot small so get there early. I can only imagine the amount of time it took to put this together - somewhat like deconstructing Vincent's paintings in order to reconstruct them here. So overall I feel sorry that so much work was for not.I went with a friend (his b-day present from me) – what a disappointment it was. Good marketing (they fooled me) but very poor outcome. Not recommended, especially for the price and location.
