tripadvisorAn incredible experience basking in the sunshine of Endea Owens and the Cookout. This was world class music in an intimate, cabaret setting. It was a whole package of delight - cool venue, tasty food, excellent service, and music that had us all on our feet. I'm so glad I found this venue. Would absolutely go again.
MoreWe attended a show at the JAI. We had a group of 4 at one of the back row tables. We got to the show 20 minutes before start time. Clearly we were the last people there. We tried to get seated and the table in front of us were seated and their chairs pushed up to the back of our chairs which were tucked under the front of our table. There was literally no way for 2 of us to sit down without moving our table back. Because the tables are so tight in there, it wasn't too surprising. There was a rope behind the table which we had to move to get room to be seated. We scooted that back a little bit so we could get into the seats.. A security guard prompty ran over and VERY loud and rudely told us we couldn't move the rope. I asked him how we were supposed to sit in our seats without moving things back a foot or so, and he said YOU FIGURE IT OUT, YOU CAN'T MOVE THE ROPE. He said there might be a wheelchair needing to come through (i didn't see anyone in a wheelchair and we would have moved for them if there were). We had no choice, as soon as he left we moved the stuff back a little, then he came back again making us move up. My husbands knees were spread apart because there was literally no room for his legs. I had to sit with my back to the stage because it was the only way to fit my legs anywhere. This was the most uncomfortable experience I've ever had at a live music performance, both due to crowding, and the incredibly rude staff member. They need to take one row of tables out and raise the prices to accommodate less ticket sales. I sent them this comment on their social media private message system, and they didn't even have the courtesy to respond. Never again
MoreI managed to squeeze in an afternoon jazz concert by Pete Sprague and friends. Great open venue, good sound and well attended by many locals. La Jolla has a wonderful performing arts space - well worth checking out the upcoming performances if you plan to be in the San Diego area!
MoreWe receive a flyer for Twayla Tharp's anniversary production in San Diego, Spraekels auditorium downtown. Usually I'm a ballet aficionado andvsymphony but honestly I don't know much about modern dance except the name Alvin Albee and Twyla Tharp and Isadora Duncan so I don't want to miss a chance here. The theatre reminds me of the beautifully refurbished ( Canon) -and Wintergarden gems in Toronto, but this one is very New York and intimate. I like that. There are three sets search about 20 minutes with 20 minute intermissions. The first is a collection of country dances with do-si- doh combinations, lifts and moves. Perfect for the fall season. Costumes are bright, dancing appears to be primarily balletic with surprising releases, flexed instead of pointed toes, energetic moves between pairs and quartets. The next is based on music from Beethoven, the moves similar to the first but more complicated and entwined. The last called Brahms Paganini is my favourite as a solo dancer excels in his dance, riveting the audience with the contrasts in the dance style. The next section follows with the ensemble who work together and apart, combining, balancing, juxtaposing one another. They are unique( to me), elegant, humorous, striking and I cannot take my eyes off them. This is an amazing show, good for absolutely all ages and I reflect that my 8 year old grandson might have been fascinated by the dance. There are in deed a few young children here, as quiet and dazzled as the more mature. I feel exuberant and somehow hopeful leaving the theatre so glad I have been a party to such a great performance. My only thought is that music performed live might have increased the pleasure but then the focus might have been tipped towards the well known playing of the pieces as opposed to the dancers on stage. I like the absence of a set but tapped music gave me pause. Thank you La Jolla music society for this wonderful evening.
