tripadvisorThere are numerous monuments scattered around the Capital Complex including this one dedicated to Texas Volunteer Firemen. It is the work of sculptor J. Segesman and originally erected in 1896. What you see is a bronze figure of a volunteer fireman with a frightened rescued child in his left arm along with a lantern is his right. The volunteer fireman is standing upon a modestly adorned granite pedestal with engraved names of volunteer firefighters who have lost their lives in Texas in the past. It is a nice testimony and statue to see if planning on monument viewing around the Capital grounds.
MoreErected in 1896 and altered in 1905, this brass statue of a firefighter holding a child he undoubtedly saved from a fire sits atop a tall white monument in honor of those who died saving others. It's an impressively large status with a metal plaque listing the names of those who died in service to the greater Austin, TX community. One of the reasons I liked this statue so much is simply that it isn't a monument you see in very many other state capitols are large public spaces. Those who died in war are rightly memorialized, but police and firefighters who risk their lives everyday aren't.When you enter the Capitol Grounds from the main gate and walk up the pathway toward the Capitol buildings this rises up on your left across from the Confederate War Memorial status in a clearly visible place of honor. As it is outdoors the elements will determine whether or not this is a good monument to visit (it was a bit foggy and hot on the day we went to the Capitol but the skies did open up for us later). If you are walking the grounds it is a good couple minutes of your day to appreciate the artistry and honor the names of those public servants who sacrificed themselves for others.
