tripadvisorRating: ★★☆☆☆ (2 out of 5 stars)Review Title: Mozart and Beethoven Deserved Far Better — A Deeply Disappointing Classical Music Performance! My wife and I attended the Candlelight: Mozart vs. Beethoven concert at the Orlando Museum of Art on October 9, 2026, with great anticipation. As a longtime connoisseur and passionate admirer of fine classical music, I was looking forward to an evening celebrating two of history’s greatest composers. Unfortunately, we left profoundly disappointed, wondering how such magnificent compositions could have been performed with so little of the artistry, finesse, and musical sensitivity they deserve. The First Violinist — A Serious DisappointmentThe greatest disappointment was the first violinist, who appeared to serve as the quartet’s musical leader. While he may have possessed the organizational skills to coordinate the ensemble, his actual performance, in my opinion, fell considerably short of the professional standards expected when performing Mozart and Beethoven. His handling of the bow was particularly troubling. Rather than demonstrating the finesse, fluidity, control, and delicate touch normally associated with accomplished classical violin playing, his bowing frequently sounded forced, abrasive, and heavy-handed.At times, it seemed as though he were grinding away at the strings with a chainsaw rather than allowing the violin to sing with the warmth, elegance, and expressive beauty for which the instrument was designed!Frankly, his playing occasionally reminded me more of a lively country hoedown than a sophisticated classical performance.Poor Intonation and Questionable Musical InterpretationAdding to my disappointment was the first violinist’s intonation. His pitch accuracy and tonal consistency frequently seemed to suffer, and unfortunately, we as audience members suffered right along with him.Equally troubling were what I perceived as unnecessary accents, embellishments, and stylistic liberties that seemed out of place in these timeless compositions.Certainly, every accomplished musician brings personal interpretation to classical music. However, there is a tremendous difference between revealing the composer’s musical intentions and imposing effects that detract from the original work.In my opinion, the first violinist repeatedly crossed that line.A great violinist knows when to let the instrument sing, when to allow a musical phrase to breathe, and when restraint is more powerful than excessive expression. Unfortunately, those qualities were too often missing. The Quartet Stayed Together — But That Isn’t EnoughTo the quartet’s credit, the musicians generally maintained their rhythmic coordination throughout the concert. However, I found myself wondering how the remaining performers managed to preserve that cohesion given the first violinist’s apparent difficulties with bow control, intonation, and interpretation.Playing together is one thing. Creating beautiful music together is quite another! The subtle dynamics, graceful phrasing, refined tonal balance, and expressive interplay that distinguish exceptional chamber music were frequently lacking. One Outstanding Exception — The Cellist!I believe in giving credit where credit is deserved, and the cellist was unquestionably the highlight of the evening. His performance demonstrated the professionalism, technical skill, tonal richness, and musical sensitivity that I had hoped to hear from the entire quartet. He clearly understood how to bring beauty and expression to these magnificent compositions. His musicianship was the one genuinely rewarding aspect of an otherwise disappointing musical experience.A Beautiful Setting Cannot Compensate for Poor MusicianshipThe candlelit atmosphere was visually attractive, and the Orlando Museum of Art provided a lovely setting. However, hundreds of glowing candles cannot compensate for what I considered a substandard classical music performance.I couldn’t help wondering what Mozart and Beethoven would have thought had they been sitting in the audience. I suspect they would have been turning over in their graves! These composers created extraordinary musical masterpieces that have inspired generations. Their works deserve to be performed with technical proficiency, musical integrity, and genuine artistic sensitivity.Approximately $90 for Two People — Certainly Not Worth It!Even our least expensive seats cost approximately $45 per person after taxes and fees. For that price, I believe audiences have every right to expect musicians capable of delivering a professionally accomplished performance worthy of the composers whose names are being used to promote the event. We certainly did not receive that experience.Frankly, I would welcome a refund. My Recommendation to Fellow Classical Music EnthusiastsIf you appreciate beautiful violin tone, accurate intonation, refined bowing technique, thoughtful musical interpretation, and genuine respect for the great classical composers, I cannot recommend this particular Candlelight production in its current form.I sincerely hope the organizers will take a much closer look at the professional qualifications and musical standards of the ensembles selected for these performances.Save your money and consider attending a concert by an established professional chamber music ensemble instead. My rating is two stars, primarily in recognition of the outstanding cellist, who demonstrated the level of musicianship I had hoped to experience throughout the evening.Mozart and Beethoven deserved far better. And so did the paying audience!
MoreIt blew all my expectations. All was exceptional. I was not a fan before but am now. I will go again.
MoreI had not been to the Abbey or to a candlelight concerts. The 3000 candles flicking while the string quartet was so good. Definitely recommend if you have considered attending.
MoreI can only review the company / ticket service. Showed up to Orlando Beatles event to find out it was cancelled last minute . No explanation, no refund. no alternative date, no customer support )except AI who was unhelpful) Would not recommend.
MoreThis is extremely frustrating! Me, my husband and my son all dressed up to attend and event that we have been waiting for weeks to find out a lot of other people in the same situation wondering what is happening… But after searching a little bit more it is clear that this is a common practice of the Fever company to cancel concerts without any notice… We had an awful experience
