Mark R. Peterson Plaza is located in Town of Normal IL, in the central uptown area -- between the Uptown Station and Children's Discovery Museum. The plaza was dedicated in 2018, to honor Mark Peterson, who worked thirty years -- first, as Assistant City Manager (1988 -- 1998), and for the next 20 years as City Manager of Normal (1998 -- 2018). Peterson had worked hard to implement many innovative projects, such as redevelopment of the business district (now Uptown Normal), the development of Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, a Hyatt Place Hotel, a transportation center (Uptown Station), Children's Discovery Museum, and other multiple projects, involving the development of the retail, residential, and business districts of Normal. Under Peterson's leadership there were many other initiatives, programs, partnerships, technology deployments, that made Normal a modern town, that has been regionally and nationally recognized. With the population of 56,000 people, Normal is also a home of Illinois State University, with 22,000 full-time students, and today Normal is a modern university town, with academic ambiance, developed infrastructure, great restaurants, shops, parks, historic Normal Theatre, and many other exciting places to visit. Mark R. Peterson Plaza honors the City Manager, who dedicatedly and successfully served the town for twenty years, and deserves to be recognized. It is a modest plaza, with the inscribed name of Mark R. Peterson on the wall, and a small lawn, above which there's an American Flag, flying high.
