The Little Italy/University Village neighborhood in Chicago is much more than a string of popular restaurants and bakeries stretching along West Taylor Street. It is a living legacy of the city's Italian-American past, home to the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Jane Addams Hull House Museum, a broad mix of cafes, restaurants, delicatessens and bakeries where you can enjoy coffee, tea, ice cream and pastries along with Indian, Thai, Portuguese and French cuisine in addition to traditional Italian fare and Italian ice. Located on the Near West Side, bordered by Ashland Avenue on the west, I-90/94 on the east, the Eisenhower Expressway on the north and Roosevelt Road on the south, the heart of the neighborhood is West Taylor Street and the site of Chicago's original Little Italy, the 2400 block of South Oakley and a block away on Western Avenue, where immigrants from Northern Italy settled in the late 19th century. Come hungry and come often. There are so many restaurants and bakeries that span generations and offer home-made lasagna, fresh bread and baked pastries and cookies by the bagful. Start with Scufuri Bakery at 1337 West Taylor, which opened in 1904 and has been satisfying customers with oatmeal raisin cookies, house-made cakes, cookies and pastries ever since. Next door is the Sweet Maple Cafe, known for its all-day breakfast, Sunday brunch and country-style comfort food. Along the way are Chez Joel, a French bistro with patio; Mario's Italian Lemonade, offering delicious Italian Ice since 1954; Demitasse Cafe, a diner-style venue; Country Barbecue; Kirimu for Asian tea and ice cream; and Tuscany on Taylor for Italian wine and Tuscan-inspired seafood, pastas and wood-fired pizza. At the Original Ferrara Bakery, a classic family-owned Italian bakery and restaurant at 2210 West Taylor since 1908, order a Caprese sandwich with tomato, mozzarella cheese, basil and pesto aioli on toasted French bread. Also on West Taylor Street are Pompeii, a tradition since 1909, Conte de Savola, a popular deli since 1948, and Stax Cafe for breakfast. Another popular destination is Tufano's Vernon Park Tap at 1073 West Vernon Park Place, with an outdoor patio that has been drawing customers since 1930. Did you notice the Church of the Holy Family at 1080 West Roosevelt Road, the second oldest Roman Catholic church in Chicago, and St. Ignatius College Prep, one of the most distinguished high schools in the city? Don't overlook the Oakley/Western area. Bruna's Ristorante at 2424 South Oakley has been in business for 90 years, a tradition atmosphere with dim lighting and murals and a menu that includes fried calamari, whitefish and linguini frutti di mare with shrimp, scallops, mussels and clams. Also Bacchanalia, Ignotz's Ristorante and Il Vincinato.
