tripadvisorI have always loved staying at the Doyle. However, this trip with them was terrible. It appears that no one works there. It has always operated almost like an air bnb. Check yourself in which is fine. However, you pay for parking and valet and no one was working. I parked my car myself most of the time and kept my keys because valet seemed to not be showing up that weekend. The bar on the main level and restaurant was not open. A previous experience taught me to not bother with the rooftop deck restaurant because the service was terrible. One employee shared that the Hilton has purchased it and so perhaps the current owners have given up? It's not inexpensive to stay at the Doyle. I would much rather stay at other premium hotels in the area that are fully functioning than waste my money here in the future. When I approached the hotel for the lack of valet, I was not met with an apology. Pathetic. Stay somewhere else with your money.
MoreLiterally the opposite of what I think they want for a check in experience… room wasn’t ready but we weren’t told that. We were given the code only to walk into a dirty room. We contacted the txt, have stowed our stuff and killed time. We are only 15min from when the room should be ready and no one has been to it yet. Someone passed me in the lobby and asked if I were staying there. Said yes and we were waiting for the room to be ready, this was well in time to have checked and had it clean. Clearly there was no communication w anyone to ensure our room would be ready on time. (This after txt w mgmt who KNEW WE WERE WAITING!) It’s a shame bc the building is nice and had they delivered on the BARE MINIMUM (room ready on time or ANYONE AT ALL AROUND TO TALK W US NOW THAT IT IS NOT READY!) We are here one night so this basically is now going to be a money losing situation that wasted our day and time. BE BETTER! Also the women’s bathroom in the lobby IS GROSS. It is actually actively dirty
MoreWe were attending a wedding in the area and the bride had chosen The Doyle Hotel as her preferred accommodations for attendees. After reading all of the negative reviews, we were apprehensive! We nevertheless booked there to be with the others from out of town, and wow, am I glad we did. This hotel was incredible. Yes, a little eclectic, and with no front desk, a little odd, but for us everything worked out perfectly. No issues with codes, room access or cleanliness, or really anything else. It was a little odd to have so few employees around, but Tanya at the front podium (as she smiliingly called it) made the experience extra special. Any request was fair game for her, and her friendliness and keen sense of humor made what we feared would be a soulless experience into one of the warmest, most enjoyable stays in a very long time. The TV issue some mentioned was not an issue for us at all. Simply enter your DirecTV, Netflix, or other password, and every channel you needed or wanted was available. If you're not familiar with these services or don't subscribe to any of them, I guess I can see why some struggled. But not us. We loved the bookstore in the lower level of the hotel. It was a pleasant surprise. And the rooftop restaurant/bar was incredible. The bride and groom hosted pizza at midnight after the cermony, and it was delicious with friendly bartenders. We heard that this hotel will soon change to some kind of a Hilton brand, which would make a wonderful hotel even better due to far more efficient reservations and, of course, the ability to earn loyalty points for us frequent travelers. Finally, the neighborhood was a lot of fun, too, with great restaurants, a convenience store, a wine shop, and a pedestrian mall all within walking distance. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at The Doyle Hotel.
MoreDon't bother! This place was more hassle than what it was worth and the entire process was extremely frustrating. Will never stay here again. I heard great reviews when it was 'The Quirk'. Pictures looked nice and had a roof top bar, which seemed like a bonus.I don’t even know where to start other than I’ll echo another fellow reviewer in that there was Zero on-site staff (except for one Valet guy; who was really nice and helpful). Other than that, everything else was self-check-in; all done via text by phone. You get a ‘code’ for the front door and then another ‘code’ for your room. We arrived and there were no clear signs for parking. After driving around a bit, we finally found a Valet in which he advised could park for us, or we could self-park. We opted to self-park (but after realized, we should’ve just had the Valet take care of it) as the ‘lot’ was across the train tracks a block away and was a bit ‘sketchy’. Didn’t feel too safe. To pay, you had to scan a QR code, download the app and pay. It literally took us over 10 minutes to figure it all out and pay as the app kept ‘erroring’ out on us.The code directions to enter our room were not clear. It didn’t state that AFTER entering your code, to hit the ‘check’ sign. That’s kind of important as we spent a few minutes trying to troubleshoot and after a few ‘trial and error’ failed attempts, we figured it out.So, now, from the time of arrival until we entered our room, we wasted 45-minutes.The room was just… ok. There was mold in the shower. The floors throughout the entire hotel looked like they could use an update, or at the very least, a thorough cleaning. We go to check out the roof top bar….but, it closed early and the staff was ‘sent home’ (as advised by the nice Valet guy). Another strike out. So, we decide to find a bar/get some food only to come back a few hours later to 4 Police offers and police vehicles surrounding the front door and asking if we knew how to get in!! We found it extremely alarming that: A) Who knows what is going on inside and if it were safe to go into our room?...and B) even more alarming that the Police don’t even know how to get inside. I mean, my God…all I could think about was what if I needed to call them for something…? How are they going to get in to protect us? Then, in the middle of the night I hear a loud/weird sound…which woke me out of a sleep. I still don’t know what it was….but, what freaked me out is that the light above the table (which is way across the other side of the room) was on. I asked my husband if he turned it on as we shut all the lights off before going to bed. He said he did not … Sooo…how did that get turned on? It took me a few minutes to work up the nerve to get out of bed to walk across the room to shut it off. Even weirder is that the next morning, I went to flip the switch on for that same light and it didn’t work at all. Last, I read a few reviews about no housekeeping. However, for us we started hearing knocking on every single door around 8:30am yelling….’Housekeeping’…. UGH. We wanted to sleep in, but who could sleep with that going on. There were no ‘do not disturb’ signs to place on the door handles. And second, wouldn’t they check their awesome AI app (yes, I'm being sarcastic) to see who has checked out already, so they know which rooms to clean and which ones to not bother just yet? SIGH… Nope. Never again will we stay there.
MoreWe have been regular visitors of the Doyle and its former incarnation the Quirk for 5 years. I’m talking 10 visits a year pre Doyle. Down to ‘only if I can’t get a decent room anywhere else’. And with my recent visit I’m done. For good. Over that time we have seen a great and unique for cville (think Mondrian styling in a cozy town w great food) property steadily decline upon the new ownership by Blue Suede Group under the Doyle name. Zero on site staff to be found or resolve issues. No live human to call. It’s all text based and completely unacceptable service. Maid service? Maybe maybe not. You have a better chance winning a parlay on FanDuel than guessing whether or when they might show. Rooms and hallways have been unserviced/thoroughly cleaned in two years. Mold in showers. TVs not working and no ability to fix over a 3 day stay. I will say the staff when you find them in hotel or bar/restaurant are sweet and really try to be helpful. But this ridiculous online/text only deal makes it impossible for them to help you. Most important no onsite management or live check in. Wtf?. It’s like these poor staff people are supposed to figure it out themselves. I give the staff a shout for hanging in there in impossible circumstances. Check out the roof bar it’s great. So is the am coffee shop in lobby. But don’t stay here unless you want to pound your head against the wall texting into the ether when anything goes awry with your res, your room, or your bill.
