Named in honor of famed explorers Lewis and Clark, the Lewis and Clark Caverns strangely have nothing to do with them. However, they enjoy the status of being named a National Monument, owing to the exquisite beauty of their limestone surroundings. Located in the eponymous state park at an elevation of 5,300 feet (1615.44 meters), they are known to be the most stunning limestone cavern in the Northwest. The cave's womb is adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological phenomena. As you walk through these caverns on your guided tours, you will discover naturally cool environs, seeing as the walls exude intrinsic air-conditioning. The guided tours are open during the summer months from May to September.
