The Adams Avenue Historic District in Memphis, Tennessee, is all about the history of the city. It is said that Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who founded the Ku Klux Klan, once operated the South's largest slave market on the property. Located at the intersection of Adams and Washington Avenues, the nine-acre district offers fine examples of Gothic Revival and Neo-Classical Revival architecture styles. It contains six contributing buildings -- St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, which was built in 1852, North Memphis Savings Bank (1901), Shelby County Courthouse (1909), Fire Engine House No. 1 (1910), Memphis Police Station (1911) and Criminal Courts Building (1925). The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
