Once a year, in November, the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation welcomes Modernism Week. Some of the events are free, others not. ‘Now in its 14th year (in 2025), this annual event draws thousands of design enthusiasts, historians, and preservationists to explore the bold, optimistic spirit that defined the postwar era celebration of mid-century architecture, design, and culture.’ Since I have only attended one event so far, I am not sure if they have a different theme each year.More from their website: ‘Stylishly curated programming ranging from insider tours and acclaimed lectures to elegant cocktail receptions and the annual Mid-Century Modern Home Tour transforms the city into a living showcase of desert modernism. Events unfold in iconic spaces that embody the innovation and beauty of our region’s architectural legacy, offering an immersive experience that celebrates Tucson’s singular contribution to modern design.’You are given a wristband, a map, some shoe covers (to keep each house clean) and a booklet explaining the architecture of each place you are going to visit. You drive yourself around Tucson to visit private and public spaces that have been designed by known architects. Otherwise, most events, such as lectures, were near the downtown convention center.I hope to go again in 2026.
