John Hunt Park Park

If you are looking for a great place to enjoy a game of soccer or just enjoy some time out, then John Hunt Park is just the place to be. There are several eating and drinking options available at the park. The park is interesting with many local teams playing here on a regular basis. Outside eatables and cameras are not permitted inside the premises. All in all, this a good spot for a game of soccer and a breath of fresh air.

When we lived here over 30 years ago, this space still had runways, buildings, etc. leftover from the old municipal airport. Opened in 1941, it was actually Huntsville's second airport, but the first with paved runways. The longest runway here though was only 4000 feet long - good enough for DC-3 propeller-driven airplanes, but insufficient for jets. Expansion of the runways was not an option, so a new airport (the current Huntsville International) was built in the mid-60s, spurred no doubt by the growth of the city due to the space program. By the 1980s when we lived here, a curious road made use of the existing runways and taxiways to snake its way through the airport while various city agencies, the police department, had facilities here. Today, the old airport is long gone and replaced by this 400+ acre park. Either in the park itself or adjacent to it, there are numerous athletic fields, a tennis center, running park, playgrounds, golf course, stadium, and even a military museum. We visited here late on a Sunday morning and found the facilities to be quite impressive and well maintained.
