Built in 1862, Fort Negley is an inland fort believed to be one of the largest in the country. Covering over 180,000 square feet (16723 square meter), this all-stone structure did not serve a military purpose post the Battle of Nashville. For the longest time post World War II, entry to the fort was restricted. Later, a restoration project to conserve the adjoining wooded area of the fort was undertaken by local authorities in 2000. And, a visitors center was incorporated into the structure in 2007. Interactive exhibits, a video montage, and tour guides entertain visitors at the Fort Negley Park and Visitors Center which is open for visits at no admission fee.

tripadvisorI recently visited Fort Negley Park Visitor Center with an 89-year-old gentleman I work with through Seniors Helping Seniors who has mobility and memory issues. Tracy, the Historic Site Director, was absolutely outstanding and is a true credit to Metro Parks. He went above and beyond, taking extra time to answer our questions, engage with us, and share his incredible knowledge of the site and its history in such a kind and thoughtful way. His patience, professionalism, and genuine care made the visit both enjoyable and meaningful for us. I highly recommend visiting the Fort Negley Park Visitor Center, especially because of the wonderful people who make the experience so special.
MoreAfter 25 years of living nearby, we finally visited this site—spurred by a 2pm guided tour on a day with nothing else on the agenda. Though the roundtrip walk is only about ¾ of a mile, the heat convinced us to hop on the golf cart option, which was a welcome relief. Our guide was informative, highlighting historical details and points of interest along the way.For those who prefer a solo adventure, the route is easily self-guided thanks to well-placed historic markers. The midpoint offers a surprisingly lovely view of downtown Nashville—worth a pause.Inside the visitors’ center, a 20-minute film helps tie the story together, and a few exhibits add context without overwhelming. To our surprise, we later found out that our neighbors visit often with their kids—apparently, it’s a favorite loop. And it makes sense: there’s a reconstructed fort to spark the imagination, grazing sheep for charm, a chance (however slim) of unearthing a Civil War relic, and just enough fresh air to justify a post-walk treat. A short, satisfying escape—especially if you're local and have never quite gotten around to going.
MoreWe went in late morning, watched the 20 minute video in the air conditioning before we went to the fort. Bathrooms were clean and they had a small and very affordable gift shop. They have sheep for grass control instead of mowing. They also have a family size golf cart they use to take people with disabilities around the fort, which we utilized due to my husband’s foot. Our driver was full of information.
MoreWe wandered in here on a WEDS afternoon. Nice visitors center with a 20 min video that explains the history of the fort. The Fort was built by the UNION even though Nashville was part of the Confederacy. Fascinating! Check it out.
MoreHistory buff? This is a wonderful exhibit but it’s under remodel to fix the fort You can still walk around and get a feel for what it was like when first constructed Excellent theatre to provide a historical perspective
