Rothko Chapel Art Museum

The vision of philanthropists, John and Dominique de Menil, The Rothko Chapel is a block away from the extraordinary art museum, The Menil Collection. The abstract expressionist Mark Rothko created 14 immense paintings for the sacred space, and the meditative aura that resulted is the true definition of tranquility. Renowned architect, Phillip Johnson, along with Houston's own Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubrey designed the octagonal brick structure that overlooks Barnett Newman's sculptural tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Free to all and open to people of all beliefs, the independent site made it to the official National Register of Historic Places.

I am glad that I went and it is very peaceful and quiet inside, but there are five or six very large pieces and they are all painted black. It was a good experience and glad I went, but you should be forewarned of what you were going to see.

The chapel is brightly lit, and people are continually coming and going, so it would be a questionable choice to go to in order to mediate. There are 14 oversized canvases on the walls, each one entirely black! As you look at the black canvas, you're supposed to see colors appear. Of course you don't. Since you can meditate anywhere, there is little point sitting in a room with bunch of strangers and trying to convince yourself that this is a good thing.

This was a colossal waste of time. The attendant admitted that most people open the door, peer in and leave. We sat there (admonished in silence by the door attendant ) waiting for something to happen - subtleties of color in the paintings, a meditative reflection, anything. There was nothing. It’s a good thing it was free as it was a lure to the Rothko name. A huge disappointment.

Another place to visit while in Houston which is not well known. Very strikingly peaceful. Features art by Rothko which is austere.

Do NOT see the point or hype about this place, you see 14 big pieces of boards with same color, which are all black or dark grey. and that's it! you are not allowed to take any photos, making any sound inside is also strictly prohibited. having said all this, however, this place is located in a nice residential area. have a walk afterwards is nice
