Harboring one of the last remaining swaths of bald cypress, the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary evinces magnificent silhouettes of nature. Here, drapes of sun-bleached prairie are contrasted by the marshlands, while densely wooded pines give way to a stunning melange of cypress trees. The sanctuary is interspersed with crisscrossing, wooded trails, whereas a scenic boardwalk reveals a wealth of aged trees that reside in its depths. Upheld by the National Audubon Society, this sanctuary sprawls across 13,000 acres (5260.9133) and is the nesting home for wading birds. Known to have the largest population of endangered wood storks in the entire country, this swamp sanctuary also shelters an insightful, environmentally-conscious visitors center. Bearing a stunning amalgam of biodiversity and coastal conservation, this sanctuary duly represents the wild side of Florida.

tripadvisorThere was no water which isn't the fault of the place, but we saw nothing at all except plants! No alligators or otters or birds or anything. Pretty disappointing. It's all a matter of timing, sometimes it can be great is what I hear. So we all made a joke of it and said let's just get our steps in!
MoreBrilliant and great staff too
MoreIf you love nature and long walks, and not knowing what you might discover, this place is for you. It is not a zoo, so you have to walk slow, keep voices down and really keep an eye out for the wildlife. There is a longer and a shorter walk so you can adjust to your needs. Use the restroom before heading out as there is nothing out there once you start. There is a raised boardwalk, which I love, so it gives you a little separation. When we went back in April we saw a painted bunting, herons, egrets, anhinga, squirrels, lizards, woodpecker, swallowtail kite birds, turtle, and an otter family. This time we saw a teeny lizard about an inch+ long, racoon, two very well camouflaged alligators, and a juvenile barred owl that we spent about 20 minutes watching before he flew away. He was very curious about us and flew from about 30 ft away, to a tree 20 ft, and then about 10 feet. It was an incredible experience. The trees around you are also very cool, and the wildflowers are just gorgeous. Also, don't miss the gift shop. It is filled with beautiful items, one of a kind, hand crafted things and not tourist junk. Also the staff here is always so friendly and helpful. There is also a lot of parking. Can't wait for our next trip!
MoreWe loved Corkscrew the first time so much we decided to be annual members. We go almost once a month and we love not only the nature, but we come out feeling relaxed.Corkscrew is our go to Zen place. By going almost every month, we see the difference in the landscape and the animals, throughout the different seasons. The staff is wonderful and they have so much information.
MoreFantastic experience, we saw birds we have never seen before and an alligator and even saw a humming bird as well! This place is just a haven of wildlife. If you are anywhere near here go and visit. The staff are also very friendly, it has a lovely cafe and clean rest rooms and great information around the place. Parking is free and the entrance fee is great value for money. The gift shop also has some great pictures of photos to buy.
