As part of the Smile Studio Upland team, I appreciate having the Madonna of the Trail monument only 6 minutes away. This historic statue honors the spirit of early pioneers and offers a peaceful spot for reflection. The scenic views surrounding it make it a wonderful place to visit on a break or after work to appreciate a piece of our local history.

During our recent outing to Upland, California, had the opportunity to explore Euclid Avenue. At the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Foothill Boulevard (Route 66) we located the Madonna of the Trail Statue paying homage to Pioneer Women who made the trip across America during the 1800s following the National Old Trails Road. This 5-ton, 18-foot tall poured algonite (i.e., a mixture of crushed marble, Missouri granite, stone, cement, and lead ore) are identical except for the information contained on the base plate of each statue. There are 12 monuments spread across America (Maryland to California) entitled Madonna of the Trail. The Upland statue is number 12 in the series. All the statues were created by August Leimbachand. Upland’s statue was dedicated on 01 February 1929. The statue portrays a woman in a long dress and bonnet, facing westward, holding and infant in one arm and cradling a rifle in the other hand, while a youngster holds on to her skirt. Beautiful statue of a strong and dedicated woman who helped to pioneer the west. The Upland monument is said to represent four historic trails: the Mojave Trail, the de Anza Trail, the Emigrant Trail, and the Canyon Road.

I love seeing statues and memorial throughout the state and we should have more compared to all the history around these old towns and cities. We stopped by after riding our bicycles along the Pacific Electric Trail down the street.
