tripadvisorWe enter the Grindstone Nature Area from Old 63. From the Southside of the parking lot, an interesting gravel path leads over the creek, past a silo, and into pasture area fringed with woods. From the Northside of the parking lot, a wide concreate path meanders through woodlands, meadows, and across the creek several times. The trails are marked at ¼ mile intervals. Late on a sunny afternoon, the parking lot can be full. However, with people coming and going all the time, a parking spot will usually be available after a few minutes.
MoreI needed some running miles whilst passing thru the area. Strava indicated that there some Segments in this park, so I sought it out. I am very glad that I did! After parking at the trailhead off of Old 63 S, you have clean public toilets, maps, and clearly marked trails. The main trail along the river is a 4.0 mile (one way, 8.0 mile with return) double wide crushed gravel, with markers every 0.5 miles. Multiple river crossings are done with very robust wooden and metal truss bridges. Other paths are available for exploring, although less well marked.I definitely recommend if you want a great running experience!
MoreMy wife and I took three hikes in the nature area some of the trails were mulched, some paved and others dirt. We could not believe the benches that were available and also places along the way with informational signing. So much to take in. We saw people riding their bicyles, hiking and walking plus all social distancing. Amazing to have this many parks and trails in a city like Columbia
MoreJust recently moved to the area. My lab had acres to run before but now lives in an apartment. This area is close to our new home and he loves running and smelling. I have encountered very friendly dogs and their owners on our treks in the park. There is access to the creek so he can get his swimming fix in. My only suggestion would be doggie poo bags and receptacles on the trials. Other wise, this area is our new hangout.
MoreThis is a fun dog friendly park. There is a non-gravel trail that is open to off-leash dogs. Joggers should be aware that dogs are allowed off leash on dirt paths. However, all gravel or pavement requires a leash. Most dogs that are taken to Grindstone tend to be calmer and friendly towards people and other pups. If you take a dog, the creek is not clean and frequently fills with pollution and scum, so best not let them drink from it. Otherwise, can get muddy but is a *great* place to take your pup for a hike.
