A longtime vaudeville house that continues to this day staging excellent live shows with an emphasis on music and comedy. It is an historic site for Harlem and African Americans. Many stars got their start here or perfected their shows.

I was really excited to visit the famous Apollo Theater but it was closed and under construction so we only got to see the outside real quick.

The tour consisted of us sitting in the auditorium for 90 minutes listening to stories told by Billy Mr. Apollo, watching people from the audience do a quick performance on stage, seeing the wall of signatures, and getting to walk up on the stage and touch the tree stump. I thought this would be a tour where you get to see back stage, dressing rooms, the photo wall of legends, the lobby, etc. The signature wall was cool but you view it without Billy so it's near impossible to notice any one signature. I enjoyed learning the history of the theater. Billy was entertaining to listen to.

The best way to have fun in NYC.Great place to take friends and family who are visiting even with limited language barriers. It's an all around good time. Everyone is treated like family.

I highly recommend the tour! Billy Mitchell, who has worked there on and off for almost 60 years, has amazing tales to tell and he is a great storyteller as well as a lovely human being. We emailed to reserve tickets in advance (recommend this!) and paid at the box office before the tour started. They are not available everyday and we had choices of 11 am and 1 pm on Saturday. It started a little late because the last tour ran long. Not a surprise because Billy is a talker. But we really felt connected to the theater and neighborhood after this tour.
