We booked a whole day tour. We were on the Red Head and seated at a table with another couple. Each table had an animal chart and binoculars for us to use. Although we took medicine and I used the sea bands, I think I would have been okay without them because the water was very calm. We wore layers, but being outside on the decking was windy so I was glad of my hat (forgot my gloves). Marin reminded us to keep moving around so others could get a chance by the railing to see the wildlife, but it is a one person track on the sides of the boat getting to the front or the back. The stop at Friday Harbor on San Juan island was nice. If you want to see more and be a little more relaxed, the 2 hours ended up a little short with a relaxing lunch (at Downriggers) and a visit to the whale museum (we like to read everything at the museum). Captain Christopher let us know what was happening, where we were going, the geography, and kept us informed. He worked hard to communicate with others in the area about where wildlife was sighted and was looking constantly. He found us sea lions, an otter, puffins, birds feasting, minke whale, orcas, and the timber whales (ha ha). Marin was extremely knowledgeable and her information was great! She checked on everyone more than once and brought drinks or the blueberry buckle as we wanted. The website implied that you had to order the coffee cake ahead, but you didn't have to. They were wrapping up the season.

Seeing an orca in the wild has been on my bucket list for awhile so I planned a quick weekend trip around the full day excursion. Drove up to Port Townsend which is so cute! Check in was quick. The morning was very cloudy/foggy but we did see seals, a couple puffins, pelicans. After our stop for lunch in Friday Harbor the skies finally cleared and news of whale sightings finally filtered through. We were lucky enough to see 2 orcas from one of the smaller pods. We followed them for a minute and then headed back towards Port townsend. As we headed back to base the crew got word that the rest of the pod from those orcas had been spotted. We quickly happened upon them in the middle of a hunt, as it turns out. The whales go under for about 5 minutes after taking several breaths at the surface so we didnt know where they would go. They can swim about 30mph . During one of these submersion the whales had evidently chased the prey under our boat and surprised us by popping up at the back of the boat. Couldn't snap my picture fast enough but I'll have the memory of that nose popping out of the water burned into my mind forever. It was an amazing experience. Wasnt til later when I was looking through my camera that I saw I caught a pic of the orca with the seal it was chasing in its mouth. All in all the crew, the experience was a 10/10. Already trying to plot my next trip to hopefully experience this again. Seeing wildlife just be as they are is just an awe to witness. Forewarning: it is illegal to get less than 200 yards from the whales. I knew that going in but some folks don't. So just know you cannot get right up on them. However, the whales may happen upon your vessel at a way closer range. Whales know no laws and do what they want.

We went on an all-day tour with lunch at Friday Harbor. The whole day was incredible. We saw a bunch of animals, best of all Orcas and Tufted Puffins. The captain and stew were both great hosts.I did feel they needed better (and more) speakers on the outside of the boat, but in the end, I didn't miss anything super important.I would do this again and again if I lived nearby.
