Please take the opportunity to visit and donate to their incredibly worthy cause of providing a retirement home to chimpanzees who are being processed out of federal biomedical research labs where drugs have been tested on them since the 80s

We went to the October Discovery Day. They only have them during the less-hot months because there is no shade by the habitats. You aren't able to get very close to the chimps, but can observe them across the moat. The trip there was worth it just to see the young ones fight over breakfast. Use of tools and jostling for position was clearly evident. Staff was engaged with the kids. Make sure they wear sturdy shoes! It's all dirt, gravel, and ants on the paths (at least at this dry time of year).

Seems like the housing area is off limits to visitors and only about 40 out of the 200 + chimps were allowed out for viewing. Visit is pretty well confined to the moat frontage. The staff was friendly enough but it made me wonder what is behind the scenes. I'm sure sanitation is a big issue because the chimps are confined to only about 20 acres out of the 200 available. That is less than 1/10 acre per animal which wouldn't be enough space for humans to be happy and remember, wild animals need space. It is a concentration camp but since they are already spending over $23,000 dollars a year per animal maybe it is the best they can do. I can understand now why there are only a few days a year for visiting. Maybe they would be better served if they could be transitioned back into the wild on their native continent in an open come and go facility rather than live as quasi humans.

This place is a blessing to all these poor chimps that have been caged and used as lab experiments their whole lives. It's wonderful to see them get to enjoy a natural habitat and interact with so many other chimps. I donate when I can to help out with costs and I hope others will check it out and do the same.

We went to the Chimp Chat and Chew and found it very informative. Staff was great and you could tell that they really care about each of the Chimps. Highly recommend this.
