Officially called the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is more commonly known as St. Mary's Basilica or simply St. Mary's. Located in downtown Phoenix, the splendid architecture is a mix of Mission Revival, Spanish Revival and Roman designs. Moreover it is known for its opulent stained glass, the largest in Arizona, while the religious carvings and statues inside add to its beauty. St. Mary's was elevated to being a minor basilica in 1987 by Pope John Paul II and is the only one of its kind in Phoenix. This striking church conducts daily mass for the faithful and tours of its healing garden and the monument itself for visitors.

tripadvisorA nice quick visit if you are in the area, but not worthy if out of your way. Small free parking lot in the back, but a tight fit, so nothing larger than a SUV can maneuver into it.
MoreBeautiful church. Quiet, as it was Holy Thursday. Lovely outdoor area I assume was for adoration. Lovely grounds of the Diocese of Phoenix adjacent to church, with statues, benches. A great place to stop and reflect.
MoreDating back to 1915, St. Mary's is the oldest parish church in Phoenix. It was built in a Mission Revival style with a traditional and dignified interior. The basilica is open every day for private prayer (check the website for times), and it's worth a quick visit if you enjoy visiting historical churches.
MoreMy wife and I had a truly remarkable visit to the Basilica. The experience was nothing short of 5-star. The impeccably maintained grounds set the stage for what was to come. We were fortunate to visit when there were no services, allowing us to fully appreciate the awe-inspiring architecture. The timing was perfect as the organist was practicing, filling the space with beautiful, resonant music that added to the serene atmosphere. The stained glass windows are absolutely breathtaking, casting vibrant colors throughout the interior with the right lighting. While the convention center across the street slightly detracts from the front facade, it doesn't diminish the grandeur of the Basilica itself. We also took a peaceful stroll through the adjacent garden, which was small but charming. This visit was a highlight of our trip—highly recommended!
MoreSecond time attending Sunday Mass at St. Mary's. We again were traveling and loved our 1st experience last April (2023), decided to take the stroll again. Wow, better than the 1st experience, which was great. This place is special. Love the reverence, including the reading of the word from the pulpit. Priests, Lectors, Cantor, Choir, you name it, all inspiriting. Highly recommend St. Mary's to all Catholics and Non-Catholics. Peace.................Out!
