tripadvisorThe Rose Art Gallery is the museum at Brandeis University. Nicely situated atop a hill, the Gallery when we visited was an exhibition space for one person: Tamashi Jackson. We hadn't encountered the artist before and urge everyone to see her work at Rose. She works with mixed media -- an example is the material cited in one work: acrylic, Yule Quarry marble dust, paper bags, linen, textile, embroidery floss on gauze, and canvas with pvc marine vinyl mounted on a handcrafted wood awning structure with brass hooks and grommets. What this creates are beautifully colorful, dense works that comment on red-lining, housing practices, elections, voting patterns, migration, and the movement of people of color. Examples in the exhibit included several works about the Little Rectangle, a section in Boulder, Colorado, where blacks once built their homes and built a community, now gone. A black colony in Deerfied, Colorado established in the 1920s. The people who harvested potatoes on the land that is now the Parrish Art Museum in Long Island. T The McKinney pool party case in McKenna, Texas. Black abolitionists in Seneca Village who, once they were provided the vote as land owners, were forced to sell their (and thus could not vote). A concert by Nina Simone. All these events are suggested, interpreted and evoked in works that combine paper ephemera, colors based on Albers' theory of color relativity, snippets of photographs, and more. The results are personal, for both the artist and the viewer. Superb exhibition.
MoreWent with my son-in-law Joe, an art collector and a medieval art historian. We loved it. Some very rare findings. Especially pleased with the French and Riviera displays. Certainly worth the visit.
MoreThe Tufts University Art Galleries contain an interesting campus art collection, with an emphasis on the early American entrepreneur & circus prompter P. T. Barnum and his star attraction: Jumbo the gigantic circus elephant. Lots of original circus promotion posters and articles about the elephant are on display in the art galleries and around campus. So these art galleries combine various forms of media with some campus-specific history.

MoreCame by on a reunion weekend and were pleasantly surprised. They had a perm collection but what we liked was the student end of year exhibits. Most were studies of models and nudes. Good job to a dedicated Art Gallery
