Kanani Pearl Spa Day Spa

Through the experience of living and working as a massage therapist on the island of Maui, I discovered lomilomi, the ancient form of Hawaiian healing massage. Dr. Maka'ala Yates , a Kanaka Maoli (of Hawaiian ancestry) is a highly respected Kumu Lomi Elima (master teacher of lomilomi). As my good friend and mentor, he has been fundamental in guiding me to a greater understanding of the principals of Hawaiian healing. He inspires the vision we represent.

My sister and I treated ourselves to a facial and massage during our trip to Portland and were VERY happy we did. Very professional, fantastic treatments. Beautiful treatment rooms and Mary Ellen & her daughter gave us excellent services. Truly! Cannot wait to go back!!Mary Ellen, if you read this, I bought my sister her treatment because we had just lost our dad the week before. You have such a healing wonderful touch. Thank you!! See you again!

I booked a hot stone massage because I have muscle damage from having several grand mal seizures, and a few days before the appointment I called the spa to ask if it was possible for the masseuse to wear gloves when she wasn’t using the stones. I got a call back from owner Mary-Ellen Makai (i think that’s how it’s spelled) lecturing me about how the entire purpose of massage was “therapeutic touch” (in her words) and, unprompted, she’d be erasing my appointment. I told her I didn’t find it necessary for her to erase the appointment, and that I booked the massage because I actually needed to reap the benefits from the massage. Not just be touched by someone. She became audibly annoyed with me, and made no effort to hide how this conversation was clearly some sort of inconvenience for her. When I told her that I’d booked with her salon because I’d only seen good reviews, she said “Yeah, I bet” in the middle of my sentence and interrupted me to ask “Why are you pushing so hard for her to wear gloves? We are NOT that kind of spa.” I had no idea what she meant by this, so at this point I just asked if there was any kind of logistical process reason outside of personal preference that made it impossible for the masseuse to wear gloves. She said “just the way it is. I’m going to erase the appointment (she pauses) and end this call now.” I tell her that she sounds embarrassed, she scoffs with a “not really!” like a teenage girl, and then hangs up the phone. Incredibly unprofessional, extremely questionable why a masseuse wasn’t willing to adjust the situation to make the recipient more comfortable (ALL I asked was for her to wear gloves when she wasn’t using the stones because I didn’t want to feel her skin), and extremely disappointing to see such a well reviewed establishment turn out to be managed by someone with such an immature attitude and approach towards their customers. Frankly, I’m very disgusted with the way I’ve been treated by management at this location, especially over a situation that did not have to blow up into what she turned it into. Very disappointing.

The atmosphere is nice ... the feel of relaxing oasis ... flowing water sounds, appropriate music and temperature ... but I went there for a body scrub ... and if a few days later I can rub dead skin off my shoulders .. it doesn't seem like the scrub was effective. I went there for the body scrub -- not the atmosphere -- but I got the atmosphere and not the scrub.

This is a nice place. Quaint and quiet in the heart of the Pearl District. Everyone was very polite, friendly and welcoming. I chose this place because of the great reviews on Trip Advisor. When I called, I had to leave a message and they returned my call promptly. Deep tissue massage was nice, not really deep though. Not the best I ever have had. Do I recommend Kanani? Absolutely! But try other places too. Side note -parking in the immediate area is only 90 minute meters. Be aware of this in regards to the length of time your services will take.

My husband and I both had massages. Excellent therapists - Kailin and Miranda. Both are certified and very knowledgable.
