Years ago, one of the summer rituals for L.A. children was getting a new pair of huaraches from Olvera Street and maybe some Mexican jumping beans. Nowadays, these rituals can be enjoyed year-round on this cobblestone street, which is a block-long cornucopia of traditional Mexican clothing, artwork, gifts, leather goods, novelties, and restaurants. There is also a Visitors Center where tourists can enjoy a complimentary screening of a film that depicts early life in Los Angeles. Olvera Street, created in the 1930s, comprises the area known as the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument, which is the site of the city's beginnings. Free tours are given to the public by Las Angelitas, a non-profit organization.

tripadvisorWe were happy to visit in the morning before the heat ramped up. The preserved original ranch house was probably the highlight, along with a general history of the pre-US ranching history in the area. Good lunch options nearby. Negative was having to pay quite a bit for parking considering we only stayed maybe 1.5 hrs.
MoreThe street is full of interesting little stalls selling various trinkets and snacks. The street is a bit smaller than I hoped. An hour is all you need to explore. On Olvera Street, you can also visit one of the first homes in Los Angeles! An interesting place for sure, but do not get your hopes too high.
MoreThis is worth a walk through if you are in the area. Full of nice little stalls and also has a few places you can eat. Lovely little street full of friendly little places. Would recommend.
MoreAlways wanted to see LA and surrounding areas. Took a hop on hop off trolley tour first to get our barrings. Rented a car and saw so much. All the famous beaches, Hollywood Blvd (Walk of Fame, Academy awards Theatre, The Hollywood Sign, The Observatory, Homes of the Famous, Mexician Town, Chinatown, Muscle Beach, Rodeo Drive and much more. Even took a 2 day side trip to San Diego, the Zoo and many interesting things I've always heard about. The most amazing trip ever.
