Monticello Botanical Garden ·$$

Spread over 5,000 acres (2023.428 hectares), Monticello is one of the most well-known attractions in the region. Designed and built by the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson himself, this courtly edifice is lodged on the fringes of Charlottesville. Monticello’s design was heavily influenced by elements of the Italian Renaissance architecture, while also featuring Neoclassical and Palladian architectural styles. Among other crops, the plantation saw the cultivation of wheat and tobacco on a large scale. Skirted by winding, unpaved paths and wide expanses of delightful gardens, Monticello sits in stark contrast, and yet blends in with its ethereal, verdant surrounds. Steeped deep in antiquity and a strong sense of presidential heritage, Monticello also doubles as a museum and a research institute. Built in 1772, and now governed by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (TJF), Monticello is now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a beautiful property and worth seeing. That said, some of the staff members at the house were rude which took away from the experience. One staff member yelled at a kid for walking on the grass. Another staff member yelled at me for walking across the side walk at the entrance. I am in my 50s and I felt both encounters were unnecessary. I also felt there were heavy woke overtones on most of the exhibits. I believe the exhibits could have been presented in a more neutral fashion. While Thomas Jefferson did own slaves, and slavery is a low point of our country, it felt like all the good Thomas Jefferson did for America and the amazement of the property for its time was lost in the presentation. As a result, I would not return.

If you are physically challenged or in a wheelchair THIS TOUR IS NOT FOR YOU. The tour took off and left us behind. The tour and conversations took place while I struggled to push my husband and his wheelchair up STEEP brick sidewalks. We learned NOTHING and felt excluded. Could not hear anything and wished we would have skipped what amounted to a roadside attraction disguising a donation as a tour. We spent more time in the parking lot and on shuttle buses then actually on the property. Miss this one.

A Day of Learning about Jefferson, the Tinkerer! I had no idea that Thomas Jefferson was such a science-minded, imaginative tinkerer. The man hardly slept. His mind just kept buzzing with ideas, not only about democracy, but about agriculture, farming, science, technology, literature, philosophy, cartography, the natural world, wine-making, and on and on. The tour provided an excellent glimpse into Thomas Jefferson's life and times. Sure, there is a complicated part to Jefferson's past with regard to his views on slavery, a horrific part of history that the tour glossed over. Nonetheless, this writer enjoyed this tour even more than the tour of Mount Vernon (Washington's home). Wear your sunhat and sunblock - parts of the tour are outside. I sought shade everywhere I could. After the tour, there are outdoor areas to explore, including a station where you can use a feather pen and ink to sign your personalized copy of the Declaration of Independence and bring it home with you as a souvenir. Allow an additional hour to walk around after the tour. We enjoyed walking back and seeing the cemetery, rather than taking the shuttle back. The gift shop boasts an excellent collection of items. I learned a lot, and I am really glad we went here.
