McKissick Museum Art Museum

Located on the campus of the University of South Carolina, the McKissick Museum can trace its origins way back to 1823 after Thomas Cooper sold his precious mineral collection to the university. Over the decades, the collection kept increasing due to generous contributions from patrons who gave freely of their political memorabilia, textiles, crafts, scientific specimens and more. The permanent collections include pottery, quilts and decorative art objects while the traveling collections are unique too. Check website for details.

the museum is situated in the University of South Carolina campus, it's free to visit. The North wing is closed at the time we visited, but other parts are open, it showed some history of the university, on the 3rd floor, it's about natural which is quite good.

This museum is on the campus of the college. It is a short 15-minute walk from the center of downtown and the Columbia Marriott (if that's where you are staying). It is free to see. During the pandemic, they are asking people to call in advance and pick at time to come so they can space visitors out. This is a really high quality museum for the free price tag!The antique toy exhibit and the quilt exhibits are both interesting. The quilt exhibit was my personal favorite. Both of these exhibits are temporary, though. The permanent exhibit is mostly geology, which didn't fascinate me, but that's just a personal preference.I would gladly go back and wee what they have on exhibition next time I am in town.

The McKissick has several galleries. Currently in the South Gallery there is a quilt exhibit--through July 2020. It showcases about 15 quilts and quilt related objects. They will be rotating these quilts out and installing the next group soon. Staff are very helpful with answering questions about the quilts, or other displayed objects and even the history of the building. If you are interested in textile history and in Columbia, be sure to stop by the McKissick.

This is a very nice small museum that features timely exhibits and some in-house exhibits. Located in the beautiful campus of The University of South Carolina, there is plenty of parking. I visited to see an exhibit done by students on Aviary conservation. It was a small exhibit but very well done and timely. The other exhibits featured a famous local potter and the related history. Another exhibit honored several faculty members who are significant for their contribution to the development of the natural history and science curriculum at the university. Their mineral collections, petroglyphs, and botanical / biological specimens were very interesting. All provided for a very worthwhile visit and a great learning opportunity. Best yet; it is free. Check on the website for schedule and calendar of current exhibits.

We went to see the Treme exhibit, which is a temporary exhibit. That was worth seeing. My husband was a fan of the show. i had never seen it but still enjoyed seeing the incredible Mardi Gras costumes and learning about their creation. The rest of the museum was only moderately interesting. It's a small-scale combination of history and natural history.
