tripadvisorA charming small museum in an historic building in the Claremont Village complex. Always has interesting art on display. They occasionally have free art lectures during the summer. Very much worth taking a look as part of your Claremont Village tour and experience.
MoreWhile exploring the Claremont Historical Train Station, was advised that the Claremont Museum of Art is now housed in the old train station. Entrance fee is $5.00. The Museum is technically an art gallery vice a museum. Art is displayed in several rooms of the building. With the lifting of Corona Virus restrictions, the museum has reopened and has on display an exhibition (“Inside Out: Emerging from Isolation.”) consisting of a single piece of art produced by 28 different local artists. Exhibition runs from 02 April – 30 May 2021. Each artist was asked to submit a single piece of art that they created during the Corona Virus Pandemic period (March 2020 or later). No restrictions were placed on the artist, as to style, size, or subject of their contribution. As a result, 28 outstanding works of art are on display. On display are works of art utilizing Ceramic tile; paintings (i.e., oil, pen & ink, acrylic, and watercolors); clay and wood figures, a quilt and numerous other media were the choses of the artists. All are exceptional. The Ceramic tile, entry “Co-Vida, 2020” by Alba Cisneros is remarkable and was my favorite. Extremely colorful. Staff members are helpful and will provide information about the various pieces of art. Spent an hour looking at and admiring the art on display. Beautiful building and art museum, well worth a short visit. Parking available in front of the building.
MoreThis place has all kinds of different exhibits. It is a fun place to ride the train to and then stay in Claremont for lunch or dinner. No need to worry about parking!
MoreApparently this very small museum has occupied other spaces and now finds what is, hopefully, a permanent home in the Old Santa Fe rail depot. The curator/docent/ticket taker says that it occupies two rooms but, truth be told, its more like one and a half because the foyer room also houses the desk that takes your $5 admission and distributes the tickets and other literature. However, the selection of works by Claremont-associated artists that is on display is no disgrace. There is likely to be at least a couple that you will find arresting in the best possible way. Most of these are paintings. A member of the museum staff explained to us, at some length, the background of one artist and his other contributions that could be found on public buildings in town, including the local Post Office. There is also a fine small sculpture section that includes a fearsome pike (the fish, not the weapon) and a touching pair of figures, hugging in the shelter of an enfolding cape - recalling the angst of refugees and other so-called aliens. I was impressed and wish the principles well in their search for appropriate space in which to honor the town's artistic heritage.
MoreWhile Claremont is definitely charming at first site, it's historical roots are deep! Claremont Museum of Art is a definite must! Not only do they have my favorite artist, Millard Sheets, but stellar artist such as Harrison McIntosh, Jean Ames, and Karl Benjamin. Plus it's located in the historic Claremont Depot....a WIN!
