First opened in 1971 as a small, nook-and-cranny bookstore, the Tattered Cover has since then become a literary institution in Denver! This independent and used bookstore has opened three additional venues in the past thirty years; in addition to being well-stocked in indie titles, it has hosted a wide variety of community cultural events, including appearances by Barack Obama, Joan Didion, Buckminster Fuller, Julia Child, Margaret Atwood and astronaut John Glenn (among many, others). Bookworms, you've got a home here!

tripadvisorThis place has been independent for years but times got really tough and Barnes and Noble saved the store. I thank them for that! They sell real books in an historic building and are a community hub. Kids study there all the time. Locals work there. Children probably learn to read there! Let’s be happy we still have Tattered Cover in the heart of Denver! Please visit and enjoy the experience of shopping in a beautiful bookstore!!!
MoreThis store is actually a Barnes & Noble functioning under the guise of a beloved local bookstore. Do not be fooled, it is a corporation that treats its employees terribly. Their technology doesn’t work correctly, there are always errors because they did not set up all the tech before they fired a bunch of the staff. Make sure you check your receipts and banks for correct charges. The store manager, katie, puts on a calm face but will talk down to you when you bring up any kind of issue. I feel bad for the staff that has to work under her.Do not patronize this store if you care about indie bookstores or humankind in general.I hope the workers here are able to find better jobs someday because if working there is anything like shopping there, it must be unbearable.
MoreSuch a nice bookstore. They have everything. Books, hidden nooks to read those books, coffee and treats to enjoy as your read those books in your nooks. I like them, Sam I Am, I do like books with my green eggs and ham.Such a nice place to browse, soak up the atmosphere and history. The people there know their stuff and kind find anything for you. As the biggest independent books store in the country they do a fine showing. This is a great place to visit to take a break from the hustle and bustle of visiting the train station , botanical gardens, and capital.
MoreBe careful. Colfax Avenue location advertises to use adjoining parking lot and claims they will validate your parking ticket so you don't have to pay. This will only work if they give you a full validation sticker from behind the register. If they go on their computer only and don't give you the validation sticker, you likely will not be able to get the gate on the parking lot exit to open. After being unable to get my vehicle out of the garage after visiting Tattered Bookstore on a recent Sunday and having my ticket validated on the computer, I had to threaten to call the police before their manager Ryan would give me an actual full validation sticker.
MoreI love this bookstore. An excellent idea to turn an old theater into a bookstore; plenty of space with an open, welcoming floor design. Great selection also!
