tripadvisorMy 12 year old daughter just did the keeper for a day program and then that night we went back for sleeping with the wolves. What a wonderful gem of a place. There were 2 other kids doing the keeper program and I think they were all 12 years old. My daughter loved it. They took them to the wolf enclosures and taught them a lot about caring for them and about the wolves themselves. They currently have 3 ambassador wolves who are semi habituated to the concept of humans. They just received a new wolf pup this past Monday to make the group of 3. That night we did the sleeping with wolves program. We got to see the new wolf pup and the two others (one older one and one whom i believe was only 1-2 years old). It was amazing to see all three and the different personalities and how they interact. We listened to a decently long and very informative talk by a woman who worked there about the wolves, the program there, and why it's important. It was really interesting and I learned quite a bit. They provided pizza for us and drinks and later smores around a campfire. We also watched a movie. It was really nice they had an option for vegan pizza and smores if you're vegan (which I am!) I thought that was really accomodating and I appreciated it.We brought sleeping pads for our tent and some other people brought air mattresses. The one tip I will say is if you are doing a day program or regular tour you do have to be able to walk up one really steep pothole ridden road to get to where everything is. If you have mobility issues it may be something to consider. For the sleeping with the wolves program they allowed us to drive up the hill which was nice to not have to carry our stuff up. The tents were fine. It was extremely hot and humid the night we went which is just the luck of the draw. We heard all of the wolves howling for quite awhile around 9:15pm that night. I didnt hear anything overnight but they said when it's that hot/humid they are often quieter. At 6:15am the next morning we were serenaded again. It's really cool to hear. We walked around the enclosures a bit in the early AM and my daughter and I were lucky enough to spot one of the endangered red wolves sitting right at the edge of the fence which was really cool. As a group we had all been able to see some of the Mexican grey wolves from a bit of a distance the night before. We loved this experience. If it were closer we'd go all the time but it was a 2.5 hour drive for us from MA. If you have a kid who loves animals or is interested in animal sanctuaries or caring for animals this is a must do. I enjoyed the sleeping with wolves program but if you live closer the evening with the wolves provided a lot of the same thing except for the tent sleeping part and hearing them the next morning.
MoreInformative educational respectful of nature. My 14 years old kids and I enjoyed it very much. Nice to support this beautiful important animals
MoreI have had a lifelong interest in wildlife. I have been following wolf conservation efforts since their reintroduction to Yellowstone when I was just a kid, and followed The Wolf Conservation Center for years. I finally got to make the drive to visit. My family attended a Winter Wolves program. The staff was friendly and you could tell that Jim, our program guide, truly enjoys what he does. Some reviewers complained that they only got to see the Ambassador wolves, but you are told up front that you may not see the others, as human interaction is limited because they are going to be released into the wild. That is what it’s all about- wolf species conservation. Myself being an Environmental Specialist for NYS, I was hoping to hear more about the impacts of wolves’ extirpation and their vital role in native biodiversity, but the program seems to be aimed more towards laymen and kids, which is where education begins. I would recommend that if you plan on attending the winter programs with younger children, make sure they are dressed appropriately in very warm outdoor clothes, and maybe reconsider a different season or future time if they have a hard time being still or get bored easily, as most of the program was sitting or standing and listening to the guide. They may inhibit the experience for others. Some children during our program seemed to have a hard time with their patience and the cold.We heartedly enjoyed our experience and hope to return. I love and admire the dedicated work the Wolf Conservation Center does, and hope they receive the funding and recognition they deserve.
MoreIt’s hard to believe that this beautiful, quiet environment is located just off a state road. Once you enter the Wolf Conservative Center, you are immersed in this private little forest. Actually, it’s not that little since there are acres of property designated as wolf enclosures. We enjoyed seeing the Ambassador wolves up close and found the presentation to be very informative. Perhaps because the weather was a little cool on the day of our visit, the wolves were active and we were able to see the Red Wolves and Mexican Gray Wolves walking around in their enclosures. Such beautiful animals! The entire staff was so friendly and helpful from the time we parked, throughout the tour and in the gift shop on our way out. We would definitely recommend visiting the Wolf Conservation Center.
MoreIf you want the experience of your life go and see these wolves. The staff is kind and knowledgeable and the location is stunningly beautiful. The wolves are very cared for and respected. You can see the love in the staff's eyes; I met 4 staff members. They absolutely loved their jobs. That came through. My family and I went for the tour in the morning, then went back for the photo session. The photo session was great, we sat and were quiet. It was so peaceful. We got to be alone and wander (within the limits we were given) The ambassador wolves stole the show. They are incredibly beautiful and there is no hesitation that you need to respect them, they command it. They allowed us to see them and photograph them, that was clear. Had they decided not to, they would have left. :) they have a lot of room to roam. The best word that I can use to describe this experience was majestic, or mystical. They seem like something out of a fairytale. I've really never experienced anything like this. I can't wait to go back in the winter. My kids 10 and 8 talked the entire drive home about how they too were going to save the wolves when they are grown.
