tripadvisorGreat modern mall with lots of stores and places to eat; loved the free 20-minute hula show.
MoreAfter yesterday's North Shore adventure (which somehow ended with me driving back to Waikīkī at six in the morning after meeting a rather charming local), I finally crawled into the wonderfully air-conditioned bed at the Royal Hawaiian and slept like the dead. When I woke a little after noon, I made myself one of the complimentary coffees and slowly came back to life. I wasn't exactly bursting with energy, but I also didn't want to waste the sunshine. A long, hot shower helped me feel human again before I threw on a simple white tank and olive shorts, added just enough makeup, and took a rideshare to Ala Moana Center.First priority: food. I landed at Steak & Fish Company and ordered the grilled mahi mahi with a fresh salad. Light, perfectly cooked, and exactly what my body was craving after the previous night. A cold drink alongside it hit the spot. What I loved most was how comfortable the center feels. Unlike a typical enclosed mall, Ala Moana's open-air design is filled with tropical gardens, koi ponds, waterfalls, and palm trees, so it still feels like you're outdoors. Between the shaded walkways and the air-conditioned stores, it was the perfect escape from the afternoon heat while still keeping that island vibe alive.I wandered for hours, browsing everything from Louis Vuitton and other luxury boutiques to surf shops and local Hawaiian retailers, people-watching, and simply slowing the pace down. Even if you're not planning a big shopping spree, it's a genuinely enjoyable place to spend an afternoon.Judging by the photos I snapped, I may have drawn a few extra glances along the way. Occupational hazard in Hawaiʻi, apparently.Practical tips: Free parking is plentiful, the center is easy to navigate despite its size, the restrooms were clean, and there are plenty of places to sit when your feet need a break. It opens at 10:00 a.m., making it an ideal stop after a morning at the beach—or, in my case, after a very late night.Ala Moana was the perfect low-key reset. If you're staying in Waikīkī, carve out at least half a day. Whether you're shopping, grabbing lunch, or simply escaping the afternoon heat, it's one of the nicest shopping centers I've visited. I left feeling refreshed, recharged, and ready for whatever the islands decided to throw at me next.========Photo note: To respect other visitors' privacy, I've used AI in some photos to remove people who happened to be in the background. The locations themselves haven't been altered, but a few photos may look less crowded than they were in real life.
MoreBeing this size you obviously have every name you've heard of here and countless you haven't. Huge variety also of countless food options.I was a little disappointed to go the information desk for direction to a store only to find the lady only spoke Japanese and no one else working. That's Waikiki these days/years, but they should do better.*The Japanese lady was lovely and did her best to point us the right way but we were a long way off when had to go up 2 levels and basically cross the entire mall.
MoreThis is a great shopping center with diverse shops and a large food court. We enjoyed the free hula dancing show at 5pm.
MoreBreaking up the mad heat of the day, passing a hour looking around some of the many different shops within the large open air mall, spread across numerous floors. There’s a large clean food hall if need a quick bite to eat.
