We saw an excellent performance of “Marriage of Figaro.” The quality of the entire production - the singers, orchestra, set design, costumes, etc. - was excellent. The seats are comfortable. We sat in the balcony near the back and could see just fine; there didn’t appear to be a bad seat in the house. The only slight complaint is the restroom situation - restrooms are across the courtyard. It was raining (pouring, actually) the day we were there so … we got wet. However, I highly recommend attending the opera; musically speaking, it is top notch!

This is one of Colorado's most revered sites: the 1878 opera house that continues to provide world-class performances in a classic mining-town setting. We came here to take in the opening-night performance of Douglas Moore's The Ballad of Baby Doe, which had its premiere in this very building in 1956. Interestingly the historical Baby Doe Tabor was a resident of Central City at the time that the opera house celebrated its opening. Despite its age, however, this is a thoroughly up-to-date venue that has air conditioning (which, at 8500 ft. altitude, wasn't needed despite serious heat down in Denver at the time). Its restrooms are ample and modern. And the charming gardens on either side of the building are great for relaxing and meeting opera patrons. If you have the change, don't miss the opportunity to enjoy first-class music in this unique old-west setting.

I had been a little worried about whether there would be AC or ADA bathrooms, but it's all been well modernized. Good air conditioning, an ADA accessible entrance to the main level - you can't get in the balcony if you can't do stairs - and you do have to pop outside for the bathrooms but they're in a nice courtyard area off the ADA entrance. They have monitors to the left and right of the stage that show translations or scene-setting information sometimes, but go black when there's nothing to say, so they aren't distracting. I was able to see them fine from the left side of the balcony. From the balcony you can see down into the pit a little bit, which is interesting! The place has a little bit of that old carpet smell covered up with lavender scent, but it's not overwhelming. The doors usually open 30 minutes before a show, and there are some nice gardens to sit and wait beforehand.

If you’re looking to enjoy an actual classic opera, do not waste your time or money on Central City opera. Took my kids to introduce them to the all-time favorite classics, the Barber of Seville. What we saw instead was a bizarre clown-like display of absurdity on a hot pink and bright yellow stage set that will take us two days to recover from. Rossini would have turned in his grave if he were to somehow find out that his timeless classic piece was turned into a grotesque circus with wide streaks of wokeism where male actors shake their behind into the audience and change into rainbow-colored skirts. When one lacks talent, obviously like those who directed this vulgar performance, one always claims it’s their “take”. But no, it’s lack of talent. Voices and orchestra were good, but unfortunately for them, they were overshadowed by the directors’ egoistic trip.
