This 35-acre wetland along I-25 is closed for public access except by advance reservation at the adjacent Las Golondrinas museum. Announced in local media, it ended its 28-year lease of the wetland with the Santa Fe Botanical Garden in December 2021 to take the preserve “in a new direction.”.

As a transplant to the desert, it's nice to see a bit of wetland. I come out here, when I'm feeling homesick. I only wish it was open more often.

This is a gentle oasis awat from the bustle of Santa Fe galleries. We saw at least 5 different Types of dragonflies lots of hummingbirds and unusual wildflowers. It is quiet and very green. Volunteers are on hand for directions and nature information. Check the hours before you go – they close early and are only open on weekends in the summer time.

This is not a hike, nor a place that will give you sweeping vistas. It will, however, give you a simple, quiet stroll through a part of Santa Fe that is ecologically important. This is good for those coming up to altitude, or those who cannot walk long distances. The paths are clearly marked but are still natural i.e. not graded/flat, so not suitable for most wheelchairs/walkers etc. There is some shade. I saw some butterflies, birds, frogs, ducks, lovely plants and trees and very few people. There are some interesting views tucked in between the trees if you take time to look. There are many benches and picnic benches - stop and enjoy the quiet and solitude for a few minutes. The volunteers at the front were helpful, there are maps and other literature that might help your enjoyment. There is a port-a-potty, but no other facilities. It is free, but consider making a donation.

The main trail is wide enough for two to walk abreast. In late October the Rio Grande Cottonwoods are absolutely gorgeous. Robins and warblers are eating the Russian Olive berries.
