Named after the family of Nan Fergeson, this patch of land has served Okemos residents not just for years, but for centuries. As a kid,I played here sometimes. That was 70 years ago. I fished here, rode my bike into and through it, and day dreamed here. I stood as a safety patrol near here. Later, I canoed here, hiked into and through here, and snuck a kiss or two from girlfriends here. I graduated from high school just a couple hundred yards from here. In the 1800's, Mr. Orton built a water powered grist mill here. Remains of his stone dam and old millrace are still there. Over the centuries before us, the Chippewa Indians. I wish that I could contribute more of the Indian history, but must rely on others for that. I suspect though, that today's kids aren't the first ones to enjoy playing in the water here. That has probably been going on for nearly a thousand years or more.

This park is right on the river. It is pretty small but cute and a nice place to take the kiddos once in a while.

Ferguson Park is a great stop for families with small children. It has a small playground area and grills. There is a grassy area where you can walk, but it is frequented by a good number of geese which makes it somewhat messy. It offers a nice area to launch a canoe or kayak for a leisurely trip down the Red Cedar River. For older children or family groups I would recommend Wonch Park which is right across Okemos Road.

Ferguson Park is located on the east side of Okemos Road just north of Mt. Hope Road. The park has nice play ground equipment for kids and a limited picnic area. While not large it is located on the Red Cedar River.
