Seeing the beautiful art pieces was clouded with the racial discrimination my friend experienced. When we entered, we walked around for 15mins and one on the employees approached my friend and asked him if he had anything in his bag, pretty accusing of shoplifting with any empirical evidence. She had ABSOLUTELY no reason for this accusation. The floor plan of the gallery is pretty open with multiple cameras, if they had doubts they could’ve looked at the cameras instead of approaching us. The overall tone of the encounter was very passive aggressive, her words and tone were not matching her very racially under-toned actions. She then came to me and said “I feel bad, I hope he is not upset” meaning she knew her actions were wrong and she felt ‘guilty’. This experience was very horrible, I thought was I was going to have a good time looking at art which I love but instead I had to experience a very harsh and hurtful lesson on racism.

We always visit Foster/White when in Seattle. It's a terrific space. They feature excellent contemporary artists, and always have new pieces by Will Robinson, one of the most interesting and innovative sculptors working in large stone pieces anywhere.

Foster White has been around since 1968. They are an anchor of the burgeoning Pioneer Square gallery scene and have been one of Seattle's most influential galleries representing artists like Morris Graves, Mark Tobey, Dale Chihuly, Alden Mason, Lois Graham and Tony Angell.
