tripadvisorSome interesting historical photos and background on the shipyard andits employees. The tower gets you good views of the Columbia River and the old shipyard
MoreThis place is very difficult to reach by public transport, the nearest bus stop is about two miles away on C-Tran Route 6 at the last stop on Grand Avenue. Nevertheless it has a lot of interesting signboards telling the story of the World War II shipbuilding effort that took place just downstream from the Memorial. Unfortunately a lot of trees have grown up which block the view of the remains of the shipyard even from the viewing tower. The remains are better seen across the Columbia River on the Oregon side, about a half mile from the northernmost stop on the Trimet Number 70 bus.
MoreGrowing up in Vancouver in the 60s, I was aware of the WWII shipyard and some of the history. This site really brings it to life. It is well maintained and the historical placards are extremely well done. There was a lot to learn, even for a an old kid from Vancouver.
Morewhat a great find.A nice little beach just before the Shipyard Memorial. Children in the cold water! Our dog loved it. the Memorial was informative and well kept up.
MoreVery simple setup tucked in the corner of Marine Park with a number of information panels explaining the WWII shipyard that was built here, the workers (Rosie the Riveter, etc.) who worked here, the Kaiser family who built it, the transport and warships built here, etc. A nice touch is the observation tower that visitors can climb up to see the remnants of the shipbuilding berths and some of the buildings from the yard that still remain (albeit repurposed for other businesses). There's even a period photo on the observation deck with the various structures highlighted to help visitors locate these structures and identify their original purposes. The tower also provides some great views of the Columbia river including the airport just upriver.
