tripadvisorThis was my first long hike and I must say it was worth training for! We spent two nights making it around the Three Sisters and finally a long Broken Top.
MoreBroken Top is a healthy hike with stunning views. The hike is moderately difficult but the trail is solid and easy to follow. Getting to the trailhead was a wild ride-- best to have a 4-wheel vehicle to get there. Best well worth the unique setting and beautiful views.
MoreThis used to be a very pristine place with few hikers and campers, but the secret is out now, due to a magazine article about Broken Top Trail. The views are spectacular and there are enough rustic camping pads to accommodate about 18 tents, so it works. However none of the scenes are free of people now, if you're there to take photographs and enjoy the scenery. If you can handle that, then the myriad of stars you see at night and the wonderfully cold lake that graces the almost-top of this climb are well worth the 2 mile hike in (after driving a 4x4 up a somewhat tough road). You can also hike in on the Green Lakes Trail, but that is a lot longer and more elevation to climb. This route took us about 2 hours with 40-50lb packs on and some newbies in the group. We camped at the top. I would recommend bringing warm clothes also, since the temps change significantly at night and while you sweat during the day, you need wool clothes at night to keep from getting too cold. It is a high desert so wild swings in temperature are common.
MoreAmazing hike. We had mixed fitness levels, and everyone was able to get to the beautiful lake at the top! A little further, and you're looking out over the Three Sisters. The road to the trail head is a little bumpy, but we saw a Ford Fiesta made it. Great day!
