We chose Thunderbird Inn because if closeness to the SCAD dorms where my son move-in. The location was nothing but perfect and It's walking distance to the Historic District. Service at the front desk was very friendly and helpful - they assisted us holding our luggage and other stuff for two days - till my son moved in to his dorm. They have complimentary coffee, tea, juices and fresh donuts for breakfast, and later in the evening popcorn. It is pet friendly which is cool if you are traveling with one. This motel could really have much more potential if the owners would care. There are sections that really ask to be cleaned/painted and so on (like the downstairs are far from the reception). The room was spacious, comfortable big bed, good cooling AC. There is a TV but no cable/streaming channels, if you wanted that you had to download an app and stream it from you own device - we chose not to do so. Our mini-fridge hasn't had a defrost in a long time, barely some room in it to stock stuff. There were other details such as both chairs having holes in the upholstery, near by the AC unit you could see some cables, some of the electricity outlets did not worked properly - went to sleep charging our phones, then found out next morning none were charged. The water pressure was ok. There is a bit of traffic noise with big trucks passing by as well as normal traffic. One thing that bother us me and my friend, was that the cleaning staff leave an envelope for tips. I get it, they made the extra $ on that. However, my friend left a day ahead of me and so the cleaning lady saw us bringing down some of the luggage. She immediately came, she stepped into the room. I let her know my friend wasn't checking out till noon. Well, she went ahead and grab the envelope, put it against light to check if there was any tip right in our presence and hinted my friend not to forget. Although there is self-parking, this is not included - $25 day which is actually not bad deal at all if you need that and you are staying that area of town. Now would I stay here again? I think I would. Definitely more affordable than other hotels in the area and have parking available right outside of your room. This would be a much more cool retro motel if the owners put a some more effort to make it so. Price wise, I would check either directly with the Motel or websites other than Expedia.
