tripadvisorWent there in the past several times and have always been impressed by the various categories of books. It has always been a great pleasure to see such a neat bookstore. I recommend it. Make plans to spend some time there to see the various selections of books including the sections that you are particularly interested in.
MoreHeard lots of good things from the book lover's underground so decided to check it out. Easy to find on street just off I-45, just north of downtown on east edge of the Heights neighborhood. Parking plentiful on surrounding streets (also in back of shop). Exterior of building does not look like much, but signage is visible. Don't let that fool you. I walked in and was greeted by the owner standing behind a counter amid floor-to-ceiling wooden shelves full of old hardcovers. The shelves go up more than 14 feet! The owner was friendly and provided a brief orientation introduction to the shop. Very helpful. He has the aura of a used book genius, as if he knows the particulars of every book, author, and publishing house represented in the store. I came armed with a wish list of 5 books (some of them of them have been on my list for years). When I asked about number one on my list, the owner walked about ten steps and placed his finger on the spine and said, here it is. My jaw dropped. He repeated this performance for three of the other four requests. This guy is an attraction on his own! Such knowledge! After this initial success, I spent about two intoxicating hours browsing the rest of the large shop. It is well organized into logical sections. History and sociology books are particularly well represented, as are travel narratives. I saw several hardback copies of Steinbeck's Travels with Charley that are in very good to excellent condition. The books overall (hardcovers) are in good shape: no mold, mildew, or old cat odors. The owner and son do a great job of sourcing the shop and culling out the bad books. There are chairs, couches, and benches for sit-down browsing opportunities. Prices are very reasonable considering the excellent condition of the books and the unparalleled service.
MoreWe were in town for New Year's and were hunting for books to hep with Texas Genealogy. I am a 7th Generation Houstonian. We liked Kaboom but Beckers books has a better Texana collection. The gentleman even admitted to us that he leaves that expertise to them. But every other section was bursting with treasures yet to be found.
MoreI tend to find myself in the bookstores of just about every city I visit. Kaboom is right up there with the best I've ever seen. It manages to be both large and cozy at the same time, with airy nook after nook with a huge selection of books in every general and specialty topic you can imagine. The books are really well organized (by topic and subtopic and then alphabetically), so it's easy to find exactly what you need while also being perfect for adventurous browsing. The owner seems to be incredibly knowledgeable about books, too (he had read all the books I purchased and told me all about the authors, their publishing history, etc). He was happy to give recommendations and help me find what I needed but wasn't at all pushy or obtrusive, so I felt comfortable browsing and reading as long as I wanted. All the books are used and the prices are really reasonable, so I shopped to my heart's content. I can't wait to go back and spend hours happily lost in here. What a special place!
MoreVisited this store on July 4th while I was in Houston to see family. Wow!! What an amazing place! I went to Kaboom to find books for my 80-year-old father who has unusual interests in books (e.g., the Old West, dogs of Native American tribes, etc.). The city where I live in Louisiana has a few used books stores, but they're overrun with romance novels and the latest celebrity diet books. It's impossible to find the subjects my dad enjoys, so I decided to check out Kaboom. It did not disappoint! Walking through the front door, I gazed across a room with a 10 or 12-foot ceiling, whose walls were filled high with books that framed cases of more books, that were adjacent to two more rooms FULL of books. The books were exceptionally well organized, and the owner was kind and super helpful when I asked where to find the unusual topics I was looking for. I was impressed with his depth of knowledge of his inventory (over 100,000 books). He seemed genuinely interested in helping me find what I needed, much like a great librarian. I did indeed find several books for my dad, and had to just walk away from others before I blew my budget! Books are categorized into many subtopics. I passed one bookshelf labeled, History of England to 1600. I've never seen that in a used book store! There are cozy little spots where customers can relax and enjoy a good read, including a couple of huge floor pillows in the children's section (my 14-year-old loved this touch). The place doesn't look like much from the street, but don't be deceived. It's well worth a visit! Any book lover will enjoy immensely.
