Milwaukee Public Museum Natural History Museum

The Milwaukee Public Museum is a huge complex devoted to natural history and anthropology. It also houses an IMAX theater and Planetarium. The museum, which originally opened in 1882, houses over six million specimens and spans three floors. The exhibits cover all seven continents and trace the origins of early civilizations. The sections devoted to the dinosaurs, to Native American history and to the history of Milwaukee are especially interesting. One other highlight is the butterfly garden, where children and adults alike will be delighted to find a room full of live butterflies!

This was an outstanding museum! It more than met our expectations. You can easily spend an hour and a half to two hours here. The Streets of Old Milwaukee exhibit was so interesting and beautiful, fun to go in the butterfly area, dinosaur exhibit and so on. Seems like there is something for everyone.

I'm sad to see Milwaukee Public Museum go. I know it is on to bigger and better things but I adore the old aesthetic of the 90's that is very much alive here. It reminds me a lot of the Denver Museum of Science because it has the same nostalgic feel. It was $25.00 per person, although I'm sure once they move to the new building the price will increase. The crowd was very light for a Saturday, probably since they are already moving some of the old exhibits out. Check it out while you still can!

Wife and I spent 1/2 day at this museum and there is no way you can view all the exhibits in that timeframe. The display, The Streets of Old Milwaukee, is not moving to the new location so you might want to see that exhibit for the final time. The place was busy with school groups. It's a good learning experience for school groups. Staff was helpful since I have mobility issues due to a right leg/knee problem. Don't miss what you can see now especially if you've visited many times.

We started our self-guided tour of the museum and were initially impressed with the start of the displays in the museum that typically traced the dawn of time. By the time we completed what we would call a brief tour of the three levels of the museum we were absolutely amazed at how good this museum is. The history of the Wisconsin area and surrounds I s exceptionally canvassed but the recreation of Old Milwaukee Town and the indigenous cultures in this area are very well done. The third level displays of areas and cultures across the globe is also impressive. The museum is moving to brand new premises in 2027 that have a high benchmark to achieve.
