tripadvisorNew Braunfels is only about 35 miles northeast of San Antonio and is the only city in Texas founded by Germany royalty, Prince Carl of Solms Braunfels. Founded in 1845 it has 4 local historic districts and a cool downtown and square. The Cormel and Guadalupe Rivers gives New Braunfels a unique resource for recreation along with great restaurants and great local breweries like Faust. Would love to come back a stay longer than a day.
MoreWe stayed in New Braunfels for a month at a family members home from November to December 2024, a great place with many places to visit, we felt safe walking around, visited many areas, including downtown San Antonio with the riverside and don't forget the Alamo, Historic Gruene with its antique shops and good food I especially enjoyed the Oyster Bar on S Seguin Avenue If you want to try the German food a visit Krause's Cafe is a must. Also, as you would expect, lots of Mexican food outlets. We liked the Palm Mexican restaurant on I-46 for authentic food, no frills, though it does have good service and prices. Hiring a car is a must.
MoreCouldn't find a lot to do. Hit an antique shop, bakery and some resteraunts. Love Gruene which is close by. The second largest Buc-ees is in New Braunfels if that's something you enjoy.
MoreA pleasant medium-size town with an attractive downtown. Some nice bakeries and restaurants downtown near the main roundabout. Other areas of town look grubby and run-down. Best attractions are on the edge of the town...Gruene, Natural Bridges and Canyon Lake. Important note to travelers: Most city streets are 30 mph...and the city rigorously enforces that rule even when that limit is not posted with a sign. We generally find other Hill Country towns like Fredericksburg, Boerne and Kerrville to be friendlier and slower paced.
