tripadvisorIt is worth keeping tabs on the Walker Nature Center events. They hold a fantastic Halloween event. Tickets go fast but it's both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting). Throughout the year, there are a number of other great events that take place there as well. They also have some great, inexpensive birthday party options, especially for Reston residents. The trails surrounding the nature center are also fantastic. We like to park there and walk the trails and pack a bagel or some lunch.
MoreThe nature center itself is small with very few exhibits, but there are events, mainly geared for kids and facilities for parties and get-togethers. In general, the center is kept up nicely and if you are visiting or new to the area is a good source of information about the various trails that weave through Reston. I personally used it for information when I first moved to the area and the volunteers there were extremely helpful. There is not much to see, but it is a good starting point for a great walk through the surrounding woods.
MoreWe took a group of scouts here for an outing and it was a wonderful experience. We did a bug hunt at night and the staff did a great job showing the scouts all the various creatures that come out at night. Great learning experience for the scouts.
MoreThe nature center itself is quite small with few exhibits. But they've set up scavenger hunts to look for fairy stickers and different animals to intrigue young children. Staff are volunteers. There is an active summer camp associated with the Center that takes children on walks and activities. There are two sets of walks that you can take. The first, next to the Center leads down to Audoban Lake. There are a few interpretive signs here and there and a pond close to the Center. The stone gravel trail connects to an asphalt trail leading down to the lake which is ADA accessible. There are 2 short mulch trails that lead back up to the Center which are not ADA accessible. The second set of trails, which we didn't explore, start on the other side of Glade Road and loops down to a stream. None of the walks are longer than a mile. A very nice place to walk in the woods with kids.
