Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights was built by a businessman Allesio Carraro in the year 1920. The castle has a beautiful architecture one that resembles a sand castle and is surrounded by a garden of cactus which took a year to develop even before the castle was constructed. This carefully planned build and theme is befitting to the deserts of Arizona. The structure is three storeys high and is easily accessible by public transport. Though the blueprint was planned to make this place into a hotel resort, the dream fell short due to changing hands of ownership and management. Continued to be preserved as a castle by the City of Phoenix, Tovrea Castle continues to be one of the most visited tourists' spots and the tickets for its tours sells out quickly.

tripadvisorFantastic place, so cool what he did for his family!! I would really like to learn more about the history and delve into his views
MoreBefore going make sure you have tickets to get in. I saw this place on Phoenix's tourist website and it did not mention anything about having to get tickets 6 months in advance. We were lucky because 2 people did not show, so we were able to tour the house. To be honest, it's not worth $25.00 per person. The house has very little furniture and you cannot walk around the grounds because of liability to the city. The employees there are volunteers and they are very knowledgeable about the family history.
MoreIf you have the opportunity, a tour of Tovrea Castle is very worthwhile. I tried unsuccessfully to get tickets twice through the lottery. After occasionally checking the website, I lucked out and secured last minute tickets. The cost is $25 and the tour lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. The Castle is run by a volunteer organization, and our guide was fantastic. She shared the history of the Castle and lots of stories. The tour begins with a tram ride up the hill and through the cactus garden to the Castle. There, you can see the first floor and the basement. The second and third floors and cupola are not seen on the tour, apparently for safety reasons. The first floor is beautiful, as are the views, and the basement has many interesting displays. This is a fun and unique thing to do if you are in Phoenix.
MoreAt long last we were able to tour Tovrea Castle and it was well worth the wait. I read about Tovrea a few years ago and was fascinated by the story and the idea of a castle in the middle of a desert. This is not a castle in the usual sense of the word but it was inspired by traditional European castles. The new lottery system of getting tickets should help let people visit this unique place. The cactus garden and grounds are a treat and the interior of the building is a look back into the mid 1900s. If you finf yourself in the Phoenix area. schedule a few hours to visit, but beware. This is open by reservation only.
MoreWe had looked forward to attending our tour. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, our April tour was canceled. We reschedule to the latest date we could. Flash forward to December and things went from getting better to worse than before. Arizona is spreading the virus faster than the rest of the nation. Yet this company has decided that the health of its medically fragile guests is of little importance. Instead they want to force visitors to sign a waiver that protects only them and can cause legal issues for others. I reached out to the company to try and find another way for us not to lose our tickets, which took years to acquire in the first place. But was told that I had no options and my tickets had been canceled. Not even giving me the option to keep them or let the one person in our group who could safely go attend. I had wanted to see the castle since I was a young girl. It is to bad that it is run by terrible people.
